Anyone got any first hand knowledge?

I was idly browsing at J E James today and was asking about a new CX bike... the sales guy REALLY likes these bikes and they don't even sell 'em!

Looking at the spec - it leaves most other bikes in shade for the sheer value, I'm really tempted I must say - but some hive mind knowledge would help a great deal.

I like it, but for that money, I think I'd go for disc brakes. I've not looked much, but this caught my eye:

I have been very impressed by the Moda range - some well thought out bikes with good specs. I tested the Solo MTB for WMB last year, was superb. Some great deals out there too.

I agree with CJ about discs, and that Felt does look good.

I agree completely, that looks like a loverly bike (admittedly I am a Felt fan)
Disc brakes and drop bars, cracking combination I would imagine, ultimate commuter.

    100% agree.

I have been getting to work on this:-
    http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBO ... ross_rival
I changed the tyres to 28mm Continental 4 Seasons.

Even after a 10 hour shift, it's a pleasure to ride the 7.5 miles home on.
Only had it 3.5 weeks and it is the best bike I've owned (so far).

My previous commutes have been on an MTB and a road bike, and were less frequent.
Now I want to ride to work every day.
Thankfully, the helpful team at Planet X let me swap the road bike that I purchased, for the cyclocross (and I got a free bike fitting too). :D

    That PX look tasty!

I think I'd have to have discs. I'm fed up with not being able to stop on cantis, esp in the wet.

    +1

I wasn't even able to stop in the dry on cantilevers, let alone try it in the wet.
  • I had to laugh. KB asks a perfectly reasonable question about a specific bike and everyone else tells him about the bikes they like, but no one answers his question. Nor can I, I hasten to add, but while the 2011 model is only £999, the 2012 model at £1299 doesnt look as good value against some of the others with discs... Felt at £1188 for example. However as a road bike the 48/34 of the Moda is better gearing than the 46/36 of the Felt

Is it me, or are those bike reviews on bikereviews . com [mod: DO NOT link to this site, it's full of malware] competely content free as a review and more like an ad written, in some cases, by a very bad copy writer. From the Legato review comes this pearl of wisdom "The Legato is not available with pedals, so it is recommended that clipless pedals are used, which are common for cyclocross machines."

And from a Jamis one this insight into odd thinking:
"... new 650b mountain bike for 2012 called Nemesis. During the [design] process, Jamis Bicycles found it difficult to make a choice between steel and aluminum, which lead to choosing neither.

Featured by the Nemesis 650 frame is a PressFit30 bottom bracket shell, Kinesis 7005 triple-butted SuperPlastic Formed (SPF) tubing, " Errr.. Kinesis 7005 IS aluminium, isn't it? Maybe they were confused between aluminium and aluminum
Invacare Spectra Plus electric wheelchair, max speed 4mph

I have to say that the gearing on those two options means the GI range is not what I'm used to. A 46 chainwheel seems a little restrictive to me; even I'd be spinning out on occasion.

Gorgeous bikes though and I have to admit, the disc brakes are a plus point for me.

(Oh, and I've definitely discounted the Specialized now - they're way too expensive for what you get. You can get a complete 105 or equivalent set for less money)

You could pick up a second hand 50/34 and fit that. I think the Focus had this gearing, but for road use, I'd need discs.

Have you considered.....http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/whyte-saxon-cross-12?bct=browse%2fbicycles%2fcyclocross-bikes....bargain if it happens to be the right size?

Was looking at one of these in the shop a few weeks ago, very light also for what it is

This HAS turned into a search for a new CX commuter now.

Kind of fun but I'm now bewildered at the choice!

    Is the cape extra?
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Hey. I hand OUT the capes.

  • btw - I am still looking. It seems impossible to find a CX bike that has guard mounts that isn't sold by Specialized....

(the F65x is kind of the favourite at the moment, I'd just swap the chainwheel for a compact)

What about the Charge on the bargains thread? Next year's Kona Jake will have discs. I'm sure there are rather more.
  • Discs are a must have after last winter... almost washed out too many times due to the lousy canti brakes in the wet

I think road.cc had a run through of all the disc braked road bikes that will be out next year, very promising.

yeah the only boardman cx bike I like the look of and its not for the UK, tempted if had money to order through wiggle for US of A and see if they deliver, but I like the look of the whyte Saxons cross as well, I am going to have to sell my paratrooper folding bike and Carrera TDF bike before I could persuade the other half in letting me get one.

  • You know, I reckon that if I chuck the 'guard requirement in the bin and just get some clip on 'guards; I'd be a lot better off choosing a more suitable bike than compromising everything based on one requirement.
