I had no advice, I just started doing 40mile rides got comfortable with those then kept upping it by 20miles each time it felt ok until I hit the century ride which was hard but strangely enjoyable.

I'm not sure if that was a statement or a question.
But I don't ride with a club either. I'd say that if you can ride a century like that, you'd definitely not be the slowest. But there isn't much to loose joining one, compared to the potential benefits. Just keep riding plenty in the meantime.All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!
