Am I addicted to exhaustion?

I am no stranger to long distance rides of up to 120miles and done sportives all Britian and the Marmotte and have been pretty satisified with this distance over the years and my efforts. For 2012 I have been going on long solo rides of up to 175miles and really pushing the boat out in regards to making the routes as hard as possible and have seen my fitness increase and now a century rides seems an average training run.

Problems now is that if I work the weekends or cant get out for at least a 100miles I am getting frustated and cranky. Dont seem to be satisfied if I am not getting completely exhausted at least once a week and have found myself double training on days where I cant get in the miles all at one time in an effort to get myself exhausted. I just like the feeling I get when I get to the car after a really long ride and the day after.

I have been out during nights at my work and instead of going to my bed in the morning I am going out a a 100mile plus ride.

Anybody else feel the same as my missus thinks I am going through a mid-life crisis?

    Are you wearing leather trousers?

I guess providing its not impacting too much into the rest of your life, then if you can, why not?(not the trousers-the long rides)

I find you can get yourself as knackered by doing shorter distance but at 100% effort. Have you tried time trailing? It is hard work! I find after a tt I get the same exhaustion (immediately after and the day after)feeling as I do for a long distance ride (for me 80ish miles).

P.s. good effort on those distances!

And lets not forget that being frustrated and cranky is a symptom of overtraining.

Definitely sounds like you're doing too much. Getting addicted to anything even if its good for you normally is bad when its to excess. At least you are realising this though. Back it off a bit ? Try something new ?

Thanks for all replies and in particular to the wikipedia guide. Just been away to Leeds for several days and feel the need for going out on my bike but am going to rest up for a change - and get out tomorrow.

Me and my big mouth. When driving my car yesterday I got driven into from behind when stationary and can only assume from the way I feel that I have whiplash and seriously facked my right hand. No big runs for me for a while.
