Will he now that Jess Ennis has won her Olympic gold?
I will be voting for Wiggins, but will the Athletics overcome cycling?

  • My heart says Wiggo. My head says Ennis. But there are still plenty of Olympic events left, plus four months of other sport, before we get to decision time.

BBC SPOTY attracts way more importance than it deserves, imo. The acknowledgement is already there in the results.

    BBC SPOTY is an anachronism.

I think Wiggo should be nailed on, TDF winner and a Olympic Gold, that's hard to beat...

Ennis is far more attractive though, and in womens sport that counts for a lot.

Both would be deserved winners, in fact a crop of Brits have been awesome this year - off the top of my head Pendleton, Hoy, Froome-who hopefully will win the Vuelta,Murray,Farah,Rutherford and others. Rejoice as we will probably not have another batch of stars like them.

Definitely true, but it's difficult not to be bothered by it..

It's more a contest between individual sports for public attention/recognition than anything else. By any objective criteria, Wiggo's achievements this year are way above those of any other British athlete (so far at least). But in the end it will come down to cycling vs. athletics (with athletics having the advantage of extra prominence in the Olympics plus Coe's interest), and/or a media-hyped personality contest, and/or an Olympics vs. other events contest.

Just as a matter of interest though, why an anachronism? Was it ever deserving of significance?

One thing I think you can be quite sure about. I bet you Wiggins doesn't give a toss if he wins SPOTY or not as he sits in his front room in his yellow jersey with his 4 gold medals around his neck, sipping on a nice cold lager (or gin and tonic)

I think there should be a male category and female category. I want wiggins to win, and a female winner would keep sport at the front of everyone's mind. As long as its not a footballer!

Was having this discussion with my domestique earlier.

Wiggo's achievements must be more or less the best year that any sportsman has ever had, in any sport. Tour de Romandie winner. Paris Nice winner. Dauphiné winner. Tour de France Yellow. Olympic Time Trial Gold. It's equivalent to a footballer winning the League, League cup, European cup, FA Cup... and then maybe a gold medal too. It's a season that will stand for all time as an astonishing climax of a career.

However - Ennis was "the face of the games", she was tipped to win and actually did. But in my view - she'll fade into history as even Carl Lewis is starting to, and the stuff he did in the 80s was amazing. And, although I don't think it should make any difference, she is easy on the eye.

So if we want Wiggo to win... we're all going to have to vote.

Ladbrokes are already paying out on Wiggins winning SPOTY, if you've put a bet on him you can collect your winnings.

I think I'll enjoy wiggo's acceptance speech more... therefore its him I'll be voting for.

And he does deserve it... given his performance over the whole year... not just the TdF and Olympics (but his other wins this years aren't as mainstream... so that presents a potential problem.)

The winner of SPOTY is often decided by who has the biggest fan-run online campaign (e.g the massive support for Cav last year) which generates multiple voting. Cycling fans tend to be more zealous than those of Athletics so I still think Wiggo has it in the bag

I think it will come down to who gets the most votes.

    The end.

If Ennis would grow sideburns it might help her case ...

Hopefully wiggins won't mention cycle helmets in his acceptance speech ...

As well as cycling fans being more zealous, I think the athletics vote may be split with Mo Farah.

If Mo Farah Wins the 5,000 metres, he'd be more deserving than Ennis but still think its between Ennis and Wiggins.

Both sports are "minority" in the uk. But Jess Ennis is better looking. (agree with most that the SPOTY award is dross anyhow).

It seems that cycling is rapidly moving away from the "minority" sport tag - with Cav, Wiggo, Chris Hoy and Queen Vicky all being pretty much household names now.

Team Sky (or GB Cycling) for team of the year? David Brailsford for coach of the year?

SPOTY is total dross still - agree with you all ^^^!! :D

Wiggo will get second behind Ennis.

Ennis is the "face of the games" and all that as well as being an incredible athlete - she'll get the popular vote I'm sure.

    I'll be voting for Wiggo.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

Ennis ahead of Bradley for me. Main factors are that
    - her event is once every 4 years and she missed the last one through injury. This is her only chance
    - while coaches/support team obviously helped its more of an individual achievement
    - she had the most pressure on her, the weight of the entire nation was on her shoulders
    - the performance itself was of the highest quality with PBs/UK record and top 5 all time
    - for the country as a whole 2012 is the year of the Olympics and athletics is the biggest Olympic sport
    - her performance took place on the greatest day of British sport ever

If Farah does the double then for similar reasons to above I'd rate him above Wiggo too. It will be harder to choose between him and Ennis.

Whatever SPOTY will be both great and a bit of a travesty. Folk who most years would have won the title outright easily won't even get onto the short list. My vote would be
    > Seb Coe for SPOTY
    > Brailsford for coach of the year
    > Special achievement awards for everyone who has made 2012 such a stunning year

Despite my moaning above, I see that William Hill still have Wiggo as 1/2 favourite. We can speculate all we want, but these people presumably know what they are doing, so we should accept that Wiggo has an extremely good chance and work towards making sure it happens (yes, I know it's a load of tosh but it's good publicity for cycling).

That will be because Hoy and Cav have won it, so they're assuming all the militant cyclists will unite and vote for Wiggo.

    Not sure though...

Why wouldn't we/they though? I think it's fair to say that amongst cyclists, the vote is unlikely to be split - however many golds the track cyclists get we all know that the TdF trumps that, and Wiggo has a gold too. And it can't be Cav again this year.
