What's the worst that has happened whilst out

Tonight, out on a ride with a couple of mates, using the same old roads we normally use past corkscrew hill and into Kent, we were riding normally, no problems with traffic, when a black Ford Focus goes past. And get this. The guy in the passenger seat tries to whip me with a mobile phone charger lead. Luckily he missed, but he just leaned out and laughed.

I was so shocked I forgot to take down their reg number. Times I wish I had a helmet cam. Might look into this tomorrow, but Is this world populated by utter cretins?

Has anyone else had to suffer this? Bad careless driving i let wash overme these days commuting in London, but to be targeted to be hurt is a different thing.

Had a bottle threw at me by some chavs. Luckily they were a bit thick as it was plastic and empty.

  • My chain came off at a busy junction yesterday, leaving me no option but to gently coast across to the nearest pavement, right in front of a driver who just glared at me :D I also cycled into a fallen tree once many moons ago, but in my defence, it was dark and it had started to snow.
Of course I have had other things happen to me over the years, mainly clippless moments, but I have never had anything serious happen, touch wood.

Cycling along a main road when a truck was overtaking me, and I was forced to keep in to the side of the road. I hit a drain which was recessed into the tarmac and my rear tyre just exploded. Got a pinch-flat. The next day after getting a new tube, I was cycling along and the new one punctured. A slit in the tyre from the drain had punctured it. Got a new tube and tried again. Pumping it up with a hand pump, got annoyed that it didn't pump it up very well, and snapped the valve off. New inner tube again............

You were all over the road and should have been in single file on a road that size, he'll get off and you'll get the charges.

Got knocked off my bike last year by an ambulance of all things - it came rushing out of a side junction and hit me side on.

16 months on and still not right unfortunately.

Cycling in the winter when the gears start acting up, i put my hand down to have a play with the cable adjusters while i'm cycling along(prat), due to the thick winter gloves my hand slips and some how ends up in my spokes...... ouch, cut to the bone with blood peeing out, sh*t ride home.

Came down hard on some black ice, rode the 15 miles home in some pain, fractured elbow and wrist.

Got knocked off my bike on an island and just managed to get the bike home which was written off, the woman that knocked me off followed me home to give me her details etc, she broke down in tears and then my wife wanted a battered and bruised me to drive her home and walk back home.

Have to say, you were all over the road as a pack. A road like that, single file imo. No, he shouldn't have done it but you weren't exactly riding in an orderly fashion ...

Clip is short and doesn't reflect the clubs riding standards at all. It was on a clear stretch of a rural quiet road with excellent visibility ahead and around the bend, and I did look behind before passing the other cyclist, and it was clear. I didn't hear any call from behind to warn of passing traffic, and that is the usual protocol within the club, but it's a fair point.

Been pulled off (the bike) by chavbots. Had chavbots throw stuff at me. Usually results in a ton of abuse sent their way. Fecktards.
  • I've had a few near misses when I was using vintage dysfunctional brakes. Never again. Some old things need to be left in the past.

Really, I had water thrown at me years ago, if I recall; ever other abuse has been verbal. Not all of it simply cretins being cretins; some people are ignorant enough to think that cyclists have to cycle against the curb and if there's a cycle path must use that instead. Still, I've thought about getting a helmet camera; when it's a bus driver at least there's an easy place to send it to.

Beyond that I've sheared a fixed cup, snapped an axle (most recent; it hurt), snapped a rack, killed a freewheel, snapped my chain in some inconvenient settings, had a bent pannier flop into my rear wheel on a roundabout (that was fun...), had a pannier elastic come off and tangle itself in my freewheel... All part of the joy of cycling, eh.

I actually hope that the motorbike gets off. He shouldn't have done it, but shocking riding by you and your club mates. Really no need to be all over a road like that.

In primary tonight descending a long hill, top speed 51 mph, was overtaken at that speed, that came as a bit of a surprise! Didn't leave a huge amount of room either, hadn't been holding anyone up as I was doing 40 plus down it for the maybe one minute it takes.

That doesn't give the motorcyclist the right to throw a punch at him though!

Correct it doesn't and he probably should get a warning about future conduct. However, those cyclists are riding very poorly and shouldn't be on the opposite side of the road preventing other road users from overtaking. We complain about other road users getting too close and cutting us up, but when people ride like in that video, it's not surprising.

    I don't disagree.
The point I was trying to make is that it doesn't matter what anybody does, mindless violence is never the answer!

Interesting little video with the biker and group.

I suppose my view would be that as a group of cyclists you have a responsibility to ride safely and with respect to other road users. Riding on the wrong side of the road, racing each other, swerving all over the place and going 3 abreast is never going endear yourself to other road users. Even if this was a 'momentary lapse in standards' given the snapshot view the motorcyclist had, he could clearly view you/mates to be otherwise.

Cyclists often brag about (and I'm not saying you do) about hitting cars that are driven by idiots etc and are sometime applauded by others (in this forum and others) for this type of action, yet when the shoe is on the other foot...

I'm not saying for a moment they were right in their actions, but I can certainly see why they would be frustrated.

Ps. Personally I think to call this an assault is pretty far fetched. I suspect his argument would be along the lines of being a vulnerable road user himself, he felt your mate was going to swerve out again and he put his arm out to protect himself when overtaking.

    Roll on Friday!

some people are ignorant enough to think that cyclists have to cycle against the curb and if there's a cycle path must use that instead.

In my area, it is safer to use the cyclepaths by far.... In certain areas where the roads are manic anyway, and yet, people still INSIST on the roads! Seeing people actually cycling along the most busiest sections of the A82 quite frankly makes me cringe, particularly when I know there is a perfectly well tarmaced path not far away between Dumbarton and Bowling (Bowling to Clydebank and onwards depending on what route you take is crap for skinny tyres though) and by and large between Dumbarton and Balloch, give or take the odd cow and the short 100 yard bit of rough track at Balloch where it joins the end of a road.
Further more, and maybe it is just me, but, with my super skinny tyres, I have found that actually, about 99% of all the punctures I have ever had have been on the road! I am beginning to hate cycling on the roads, I mean, what on earth are people spreading on the surface of them?

I admit that not all cyclepaths are born equal however.
  • So, what's here worst thing that can happen except for getting flattened by an HGV?

    A Puncture!

I have been riding off road on my MTB. The worst that happens (that is not self inflicted) is that a squirrel scares me. I am awaiting a new road bike - my first. After reading about the actions of chavs and motorists above I am now scared to ride it! That is shocking - i had no idea this stuff happened :(

Worst thing that happened to me whilst out was probably a couple of days ago on the ride home from work.

BMW went past a wee bit too close for comfort while I was descending a hill at about 30mph so I shouted "whoa bit close there mate"

Maniac behind the wheel then swung right in front of me & pratically mounted the pavement. Managed to avoid him by bunny hopping the kerb after hammering the brakes on - he missed me by about a foot.

Carried on riding along the pavement & there's a local church with a massive car park about 50 yards from where this kicked off so the f***wit mounted the pavement to have another pop at me with his car. Managed to swerve round against the car park fence.
Carried on riding down the pavement by this point I was bricking it & having to dodge round some OAP's waiting ona bus. Meantime this utter waste of oxygen is still ranting like a lunatic.
Thankfully there's a sidestreet off the main road I was riding on that's closed off from the main road & tehre's some back roads to my house I can take from there so made my escape up that way. Got in & had a complete outbreak of tourette's

Bloody terrifying to be honest that anyone is that mental as to try & run someone over not just once but 3 times in the space of 300 yards.

Reported it to Strathclyde's finest when I got home who have taken it seriously & sent a rather nice looking female copper to take my statement so it's not all bad in the end :)
