This is off topic but how come those Shimano Biopace chainrings in the 1990's never took off and now in the Tour de France I hear elliptical chainrings (or elliptical smaller chainring usually) are "just making their way into the pro's kit in the Tour de France" WHAT?! How come it works now but now when Shimano did it? Already been done 20 years ago! Are we going round in circles?

Not quite - if you look at a Biopace ring and compare it to a current Osymmetric ring you'll see that the Biopace is nowhere near as pronounced. I've ridden biopace and couldn't really tell the difference between it and conventional round rings.

PS - I really think you should put an MTB frame on your road bike
    Faster than a tent.......
  • SRAM apex is a road 11-32 cassette, my '12 Defy Composite came with that as standard and it makes climbing manageable for this fat bloke!

SPAM have bought out - what they call - WiFLi, for longer cage road mechs. Contador was using one with a rear 28 through the Vuelta - and occasionally a rear 32.

  • This thread is making me feel well manly for doing Hartside on 39:25. Even if I was going slower than walking pace and will need new knees by the time I'm 40.

Lance as we all know is just up there above even the elites, he still has the fastest average speed for a Tour - at nearly 26MPH. I thought Wiggo's 25MPH was insane but god knows what Lance did in 2005 to accomplish that.
    I could take a guess...

Don't the Biopace ones have the bulge on the other side to the Osymmetric ones?

Think that may be true, I had a Biopace years ago and don't remember much of a difference to what I have now.
