So been riding my used bike done around 300 miles now. I have now come to conclusion I need a new fork. I don't have a huge budget 150-200 max. I have a sun tour xcr75 and it shot completely.

I know it's not a huge budget but I don't do serious riding at the minute

My lbs will do a rockshox tx30 for 150 quid fitted can I better this ?

What would you recommend as anything is an upgrade at this point.

A lot better - do you run disc brakes?

Yes I run disc brakes. I can fit them myself so that's not a problem but cant go above 200 quid

I might save a bit more and go for the reba on that site at 259 but is that worth the extra or would I be better putting money towards new brakes and gettin the recon ?

  • Depends whats more important to you i guess. For the price of the Reba you could get the recon (which is a big upgrade) and some new 2012 SLX brakes from Rose.

    I know what id do....

    Sorry auto correct.

I have giant Yukon 2007. I like the frame so happy to keep it.

The brakes are mechanical disc which are pants but they are doing ok at the minute.

I would need to swap the gear levers too as they are connected to the brakes.

So much stuff to do yet not enough money

I could get away with recon but always want better.

I barely touch a trail I did today but even my shot fork kept up with my skills

If thats the case then do you really need something like the reba? Why not get the Recon Cd recommended and the new Deore brakes. all for £200. A couple of really nice upgrades and then use the rest of the money for new shifters - for the price of the reba. :)

    That makes sense.

I'd go for the Recons, which are good forks, and maybe new brakes. SS has some from Dealextreme he recommends as cheap and good, but I can't remember what.
Might be these - about £100.

Or CRC are having a bit of a sale

Or if you can find Deore around that price.

I think that is the best bet as my skills dont require a reba just impressed with price . I only have one brake so maybe yes where do I get the brakes from?
  • The Deores from either Rose or Bike-Discount.de (very good reviews)

The ones SS got were Hygia somethings from DX for around £60 (stupidly light brakes and good reviews)

Brakes don't need to be big, with good quality brakes 160mm work fine......
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

That's fine I will look at the brakes next.

What would the benefit of the reba be over the recon? Im still hovering over them to buy. I don't mind splashing out on brakes next month if the reba will be that much better

Will I notice the difference? Considering I my riding is 50% road 35% canal paths and the final 15% is light trial. I don't want to get the recon and then have to get reba later. Will the Recon be ok with all that as would rather buy good once than buy again

It will be fine - very good forks. For what you do a rigid fork would be fine.
A Reba would be wasted on 85% or more of your trips.

I'm still unsure I think I may get the reba if I choose to do stuff in the future it has what it needs to handle it.

I am only doing the lighter stuff to get my confidence and fitness up hopefully when I'm better I can do some more advanced stuff.

I dont want to buy twice so spending the extra 100 quid now seems a better option to me

I have Recon Gold and they've handled four years of regular abuse, 99% on trails ranging from Surrey Hills to S Wales trail centres.
Depends what you plan to do in the future. But based on what you say you ride....

Well the recon gold I what 225 quid. I don't know what the difference is between any is it better to have air?

I probably plan to do some trails more but still not major stuff.

So between the recon gold and the reba the price difference is not huge.

What is the main difference. I'm near on 18 stone and want to get something that lasts

They will all last. If maintained they will outlast the bike.

The big difference is only between the Silver and Gold. Silver is heavier and doesnt have a lot of adjustment. however its only a couple of hundred grams heavier. The difference between Gold and Reba is minimal and i doubt you would notice it or use it.

That's good to hear. So the weight is the only main difference then?
  • [ Silver is heavier and doesnt have a lot of adjustment.

Gold is more adjustable. I was just trying to say that there is a bigger margin of difference between the Silver and Gold than the gold and Reba.

TellySwat recently bought the Silvers from On-One and put them on a Merlin frame. You could ask him what they are like.

I think I would like to have more adjustment if needed in future so it between the gold and the reba.

Is the reba 40 quid better than the gold ?

Yes, but once you've bought Rebas, and all the other bit's in all your other threads you could probably have bought a new bike.
Say £250 for forks, £150 for brakes, £50 for shifters, various bits of chain, cassette, saddle and a other bits I don't remember. That's heading toward new Boardman price.
