Buy the Cube if you want a great bike or the Canyon if you want lots of shiny bits bolted to a very average frame.

Go on then, explain how it's a very average frame.

Me too. Opinion is great but is there evidence of this?

Me too, please tell us what makes the canyon an average frame?

I suspect you have never owned one and based your opinion on the direct sales model and not researched the pedigree Canyon has.

obviously you must know something that all the professional testers who work for the bike mags don't, but then again your the guy who says xc racers are crap going down hill

I can only speak about the AM 7.0, as I've just had my first proper ride on mine, and I absolutely love it. The shiny bits are very shiny, and the frame is great.

It's the model you have that I like very much

Tried a mates AM 6, was ok but just not a great ride. Everything worked how it should but nothing about the bike encouraged me to push harder and have fun.

Lol, so a "go on a mates" brought you to the conclusion it is a poor frame?

    Shakes head in disbelief....

15 miles is plenty to get a good feel for a bike. He wanted to try the Trance X2 demo bike I had for the week & I thought the Canyon could be another option worth trying. I much prefered the Trance and the Norco Sight I also borrowed for a weekend.
I didn't say it's a poor frame, it's just average. Didn't feel as lively as some of the other bikes I tried.

    Thank you for your opinion.

I'm still wondering which of the 2 of my options are the better 1?

If put to the test which would be the better all rounder?

    Heres the specs for both:

no doubt the likes of specialized, giant etc etc are just queuing up out side your front door with bated breath waiting for you to test their bikes and give your opinion

Hi Chez_m only cube and canyon. I don't wanna judge solely by looks but I really really like the look of the strive.

It has 160mm of travel but can this be lowered? I am not going to be doing much downhill but I do live near the sierra nevada and tejeda which are awesome place for uphill and downhill trails and some jumps

    So it's really between those 3 :)

I don't mind spending the extra for the strive but I just got the impression it was mostly for downhill?

    Cheers

I notice people are very touchy about any criticism towards Canyon bikes. I have nothing against Canyon in general, and nothing against mail order bikes (I own a Nukeproof!) I just don't like the Nerve AM, I quite like the Torque FRX and Strive (other than the Crank Bros wheels). I think the Strive may be a bit much for what the OP wants.
Is it not acceptable to post negative comments about a bike when someone asks? Or can you just not say anything negative about Canyon bikes?
I didn't say it was a bag of shoot, just that it's not as exciting to ride as some of the alternatives. Personally at this price range & for this type of riding I would go for either the Norco Sight, Cube Stereo or Rose Granite Chief.

I wouldn't bother with the Strive if you're not that fussed about the descents, I've got a Strive and it's superb but definitely more focused at descending rather than climbing although it will rather well. A 140mm bike will usually be the better climber. I went with a bigger bike as I want to get into DH and can currently only justify one bike that needs to do everything

The majority of my cycling will be done on the sierras tejeda almijara y alhama and the sierra Nevada. It is far from flat here with lots of uphill and descents with trails, it's so varied. I need an all rounder that can take a punch it's wild here.

    So it is between the

    Cube AMS 130 SL

    Canyon nerve am 7

    Canyon strive es 7

    From Canyons site they stipulate:
Whether it's uphill or downhill, enduro means for us all-purpose biking. The Strive ES frame is an outstanding basis for this with its 160mm of travel, which really comes into its own thanks to the FOX suspension components. The rear triangle offers sensitive and inconspicuous function with the specially adapted RP2 Boost Valve shock and XXV air chamber. The Strive ES 7.0 is equipped with a FOX 36 TALAS Performance fork, which would also cut a fine figure on a top of the range model.

If you like Cube I think you would be better off with the Cube Stereo rather than the AMS130. It's a bit tougher, a little slacker and still fairly light.

The only thing that is a little off putting with canyon is that it's direct buy, where as at my LBS I can get my cube and go directly to them if I have issues. :?

I had the same concerns, luckily nothing major was wrong with my Canyon when it arrived, other than:

Hose clip missing - new hose clips sent.
Little chip where hose clip was missing - Canyon gave me some cash back, which is great as I fully expect it to be chipped in a few weeks anyway once I've fallen off a few times.

I couldn't justify the price difference between the AM 7.0 and a Trek Remedy 8 (which my LBS had offered me a great deal on) just so that I can shout at my LBS if something went wrong.

Hi, can only comment on the am6 which I've had for just under a year now. I switched from a giant anthem and found it a revelation, completely changed my riding, feeling much more confident on descents ad constantly pushing faster and harder trails.
I think the blingy kit is a bonus but the frame compares well with my old anthem, feels solid and planted when needed, but you can flingbit about with a bt of work. Climbing-wise it's pretty good, not as light as the anthem, but the talas fork helps on steep buts and pedal bob is quite limited.
In short, highly recommend the canyon, you won't regret it!

The strive es 7 seems to be a lot more bike for the money than the rest i was looking at. Also they´re totally sold out in all colours. Do they get stock in fairly quickly even with the new bikes being launched in what oct?? :?

    Just my luck

Again my major worry is if anything happens a year down the line and i have to send it back to Germany. But its such a lot of bike for the money I shouldn´t let it worry me?

I don't think they do restock at all, I seem to recall they'd sold out of a lot of models this time last year. Once they're gone, they're gone!

They have s UK office now who deal with issues over here. I had to get a replacement frame earlier in the year and it was dealt with by them. Be aware though, they're helpful, but stuff does take time to get resolved! I was without my frame foe several weeks whilst they sorted a new one.

Now I'm really sad :( I thought they would be making their bikes until the launch of the 2013 models? I may need to hold off until then, do you know when they normally launch is it October?

    Cheers

don't take that as gospel, but i'm sure that's what they said when i was looking last year - originally for a Nerve AM 5.0, and had(!) to go for a Nerve AM 6.0. I think they'll be launching late Sept, but they also hold a bit of a sale towards the end of their financial year, so its possible you might be able to afford the next model up then?
