Training computer advice

Hi there,

I'm looking for a little advice on what cycle computer to buy for my training needs. I would like something that works as well on training rides as on my turbo trainer. I have found that some wireless computers (Boardman 22) don't work so well on turbo trainers as the speed sensor needs to be fitted to the front wheel.

I am considering the Garmin Edge 800, mainly as it seems to have everything one could want in a training aid (GPS, HRM, Cadence etc). One main question would be how well a device like this works on a turbo trainer?

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives to the Edge 800, as in maybe slightly cheaper but with similar features?

Cheers in advance for the help!

With the 800 (or 705 predecessor) you can use it with gps off, and as the cadence/speed sensor is on the rear wheel, it works just fine on the turbo. Plus if you did get an ant+ powermeter at a later date it works with that too.win win.

Garmin 500. Amazing bit of kit. 800 if you want maps to see where youre going. I personally dont mind getting lost and finding new routes, or just downloading pre-programmed maps with waypoints (at junctions) to the 500.

I ended up with (of all things) a B'Twin Count 14+ and Heart Rate strap.

Nice easy to read screen, with Cadence, Heart Rate, and speed all on screen at once. Works well with the Turbo as its rear wheel based.

The results are downloadable to PC via the Geonaute software and you can use it for 'targeted' training by telling the computer what range you want to stay within (on heart rate or cadence)

It just seemed to offer the best value for me (IMO anyway)

Paid £50 for the Cycle Computer (With Cadence and speed sensor) and paired it with a cheap ANT+ HR strap.
