you know when on the TdF they talk about riders going into the red - well is that limit set genetically or can they train to extend the zone from which recovery is difficult?

Boring question I know but i'm just curious. :D

I always understood that to be the point where you can no longer supply your muscles with sufficient oxygen. That would presumably be their anaerobic threshold wouldn't it?
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

I have always taken 'in the red' to mean pushing at a pace that isn't sustainable, ie one which will require a period of recovery.

I'm sure appropriate training can increase both the power output and the duration of these efforts

  • I think she looks better in Buff myself.

And thinking of a Lady in Red made me think of Chris de Burgh, which has put me off my dinner.

Anyway, back to the OP I thought the only reliable way of testing for the aerobic limit was by blood test as they're exercising.

Grrrrr. Nice bit of Kylie-ness there. I'd crawl naked over a mile of broken glass to hear her parp over the phone. :)

Oddly my thoughts were the same reading the OP!
