no wonder they can fly up the hills they weigh nothing, and then bikes that weigh less than 17lbs

Er - Wiggins is heavier than you .. as is Cav ... ok - their bikes are light ... but all up I guess they're about the same as you (unless you have a 20kg bike!)

    you're what - 66kg + 12kg bike* = 78Kg.
    Wiggins - 76Kg + 6Kg bike = 82Kg
    Cav - 70Kg + 6Kg bike = 76Kg
    Froome - 72Kg + 6Kg bike = 78Kg ..

*Bike weights - I'm being generous with bike weights assuming yours is twice their weight - it probably isn't - but shows the point ....

It's not the weight you need to be concentrating on - it's where the weight is located ...
  • Thats a good point u might weigh 10stone but u could have a heavy bike and water bottles pump and kit, easily 6lbs in weight, ive often consider dropping to 10stone not sure I will bother

What are your bodyfat and lean mass percentages?

I'm 5' 10", 158lbs, 14%bf .. my ideal weight is about 152 at 10%bf, or even 148-150 if i can get it lower and maintain my current lean mass.

If your bodyfat is low at the moment (say 10% or less) then you're probably about spot on with your weight.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Then we're the same height and LBM, but im carrying around 12lbs more fat than you. So you're only too light if you're not putting out enough power to sprint or TT compared to what you want. If that's the case then you simply need to add some LBM. Otherwise, you should climb very well at that body composition.

Putting on muscle in itself won't help anyone TT faster. Improving ones aerobic system will help someone TT faster, and might cause a small increase in LBM.
  • 5'8'' and 14 stone (though this surprises virtually all who hear it). I am a stocky build though, trousers are always 2" bigger waist than necessary so my legs fit comfortably! Wasn't always the way though, was very lightweight until my early twenties.

Bulk in the legs isnt necessarily a bad thing for cycling though, provided it is the right sort of bulk!

I could do with losing a stone to be honest, but I'm only a few months back on the bike after 15 years off it so I'm hoping that will help (already half a stone down).

According to the TeamSky Website, Cav is 5'9" and 69Kg, Wiggins is 6'3" and the same weight!

I'm 5'10" and 85Kg.....15% body fat, 10 years ago I was 70Kg and 5% body fat. My goal is to get back to 75-77kg and 10%BF, I no longer need to carry the weight for other activities.

On club rides I am more than comfortable on the flat but the mountain goats drop me on the climbs.

Cav has dropped 4Kgs this year in order to help get up Box Hill 9 times for the Olympic Road Race, as a result he's lost at tiny bit of pace.

Your ideal weight depends on what sort of cycling you do and also what you do away from the bike(!)

Just curious - what sort of other activities required you to be 85kg? Why wouldn't your goal be to get back to 70kg? Even at that weight you must still have been carrying a lot of muscle (or something) if you only had 5% body fat (I'm 63kg and about the same height!)

I have a physical job that requires throwing stuff around!
I was also doing a lot of sprinting (athletics) and other sports....the extra BF came when I stopped doing them and carried on eating!!

I was wondering if it was something like that, great that you are actually using the upper body muscles for something! What I can't understand is people who spend hours in the gym getting massive (and heavy) pecs and arm muscles that they don't use for anything apart from doing more gym work. Fine if you get them from doing a sport such as swimming or rowing that involves lots of upper body work.

    Or perhaps they enjoy it?

when i was watch the football with some mates.. they were all like "wtf? he has a tiny chest!"

I had to explain to them what a normal physique looks like.. and that something like this:

isn't effecient.. or useful for anything.

Yes, well, that's the point really - I can understand enjoying flying along the road under your own power and being out in the countryside while you are at it, that strikes me as an intrinsically fun thing to do, and if you are doing it competitively all the more so. Similarly with most other sports or outdoor activities. I just don't understand how there is all that much fun to be had in pumping weights for its own sake, just as riding a stationary bike in the gym isn't really much fun either (although it might be good training). Of course, just because I don't understand doesn't mean I'm not missing something..
