hello all ive decided i want a bike looking for a hardtail less than £600 if possible.

looked at hoodoo and rockrider 8.1 mainly but the hoodoo spec seems a bit sucky in comparison to the rockrider
and they are both fairly unatractive.

i had considered trying to build a bike but maybe its a little out of rech for my first bike.

ive also seen the canyon yellowstone 4.0 , virtus zircon 0.1 (crc have one cheap) also a cube aim disc and analog disc

i love the cubes looks.

whats my best path ? buy a hoodoo and upgrade everything over time as its the cheapest, buy the rockrider and swap out the frame fairly soon or something else

Help me bikeradar you are my only hope !

cheers

you cant get a better spec for the money than the 8.1, you could always wait a while, supposed to be a new colour scheme out sometime soon http://btwin.com/fr/vtt-cross-country/9127-81-2012.html, or if you could up your budget slightly, the boardman comp is worth a look

If you like the Cubes, have you had a look at the Analog? Very nice to ride and looks great!

Yeah, don't get a Rockrider mate. They're as ugly as sin and you'll be a laughing stock. I have one and it's humiliating having to burn past people on name bikes and out manoeuvre them to avoid folk seeing what I'm riding. That's why they're so highly specced you know - so that you're able to pull stunts like that to avoid the humiliation. I really, really, really wished I'd looked at something in silver and blue instead......

In all seriousness mate, I love my Rockrider. Granted, its a bit garish but its an absolute quality ride and you can't see the livery when you're riding it and it's caked in mud.
  • oh i know but the newer one just looks that bit nicer to me :)

Yep, me too. I'm a big advocate of buying used. When you can get something either twice as good (spec wise) for the same money or the same spec for half the price I find it hard to resist...but I understand it's not for everyone.

Also - just seems crazy to buy something new that you're basically gonna throw down mountains, over jumps & drops (badly in my case), through streams and mud and generally give as much abuse as possible. Just wouldn't feel right doing that with something new and shiny.

Clothes & electronics = new. Bikes & cars = used...but maybe that's just me, hey???

    Depends what the price is!

Cube Analog is pretty poor for the money really, bargain basement fork, heavy kit.
  • well its on an auction site so i dont really know till its finished :) its around £100 with 4 days left

The spec is decent enough, if in good condition about £350 - £400 there. But remember you have no warranty or anything.

dont know much about that more dirt/jump i think, there's a video of the bike in action here http://www.commencal-store.co.uk/PBSCPr ... ID=9888960 though in the video, for some reason it seems to have rockshox revs "i think"? instead of the suntour folks advertised, maybe thats saying something ?

regarding the 8.2, in the ad the guy does say recently serviced at decathlon, if he's got proof etc etc could be a good deal at the right price, looks like its the 2007 version of the current 8XC
