OK, going to resurrect this thread because teenage MM junior has expressed an interest. His current cheap MTB is getting too small and only used on penance (none of his mates do it, so he has to be bribed to come out with me). Probably a fad, so I'm looking at the local ebay listings or second hand. Thing is I've no idea whatsoever.

He's about 5'8" and growing. It'll probably get used for local park/terrorising the shopping centre/round to mates.
So... you've mentioned a few makes, and 3 piece cranks. What else?
What's going on with the brakes? back only? (Mrs MM isn't going to like that). What are giros?
Lots of modding going on - what should I look for?
  • Everybody hung off gt bmxs when I was a teenybopper with them plastic star shaped rims mags or some shit likethat .think they were called.

Mike - They were called Skyway Tuffs.

Malx - How much are you looking to spend? I'll see what I can dig up for you.

    I still BMX at 33 :)

I'd like an old skool one, from my youth, but the good ones (Haro, GT, Firebird, Skyway etc) go for stupid amounts of money. Current ones bear little resemblance to what a BMX was when i was a kid. Wish I hadn't let mine go in the skip when we moved house 15 years ago.

Haha, they made for some pretty colourful skids :)

Kids bikes still come with them.

I also quite fancy a BMX, figured it'd be easier to learn to manual on. Any sense in that or am I deluded?

So I ended up accidentally buying a 'Stolen' from a blurry pic on fleabay (minimal bid and no-one else bothered). Seller described it as bret (or brete) - it's not going to be very good, is it?

Try buiding your own BMX. Its more fun that way too. Ive seen bargains on nice coloured wheels for BMXs on eBay recently. And if you are going for a show offy clown bike, then do it like i did! (i sold this after 6 months of owning it, just got bored of it)

The only thing about old BMX frames is that they are bloody heavy!!! This weighed a ton. Cost me £100 quid all in (ignore the ugly seat)

Would be easier than your SS but it's more about technique really. For example I've been ridng BMX for years and my manuals are ropey at best... whereas my mate can jump on any bike and manual as long as he likes.

    Stolen Brat?

If so it's certainly not the worst bike and will do at least until your son's figures out weather he likes BMX or not. I'd be happy with if it If was just starting.

In general I'd always recommend spending a little more on a BMX with a full cromo frame and fork but as you say, might just be a fad anyway. I quit for years before starting up again :)

That's really helpful, thanks. Just spent the last half hour trying to figure out what I'd bought without success.
I agree with you about buying better quality, if it gets ridden for more than a few days I'll something a bit better and sell it on - I'm not going to lose much on it anyway.

No probs. That sounds like the thing to do.

When our eldest outgrew her Hot Rock 20" she wanted a BMX so we got her a cheap Mongoose Subject with the view that if she likes it and wants to take it more seriously (jumps etc) then we will upgrade it in the future. Only real downside to hi-ten framed bikes for kids is the weight, but at least they take a beating.

How did you know I had a SS? Easier to manual than that or a 160mm trail bike?
