    End of discussion.

Guess you were wrong there since people kept posting.

Its an open forum and open to opinion, if people want to wear headphones it's not illegal same as not wearing a helmet so be it.

I wear headphones when i'm out on my own as I like to ride to a soundtrack, has it made me a worse rider or less aware of my surroundings? not yet. I was out the other day and heard 2 cyclists coming up behind me chatting which is a hell of a lot less noise than a car.

If im out with a group or start talking to someone on a ride then i don't wear them or take them out.

Am I going to say end of discussion? am I b*****ks since its good to see others OPINIONS :)

    Agree.

a lot of i've been doing for years and ive never had an accident' kind of responses

surely it only needs to distract you and impair you from reacting in a dangerous situation once for it to be too late

doesnt seem to be illegal in the UK but in certain parts of the world it is. might be interesting to see how the courts view your liability in the event of you causing an accident or having one done to you. there is interesting case law over on CTC

I regularly wear headphones whilst riding. I enjoy music and enjoy riding and combine the 2.

I also ride without a helmet on a regular basis. I couldn't care less if people think i am an accident waiting to happen or an idiot or some of the other responses dished out each time this topic crops up.

We all have a perception of risk, and in my mind headphones and cycling don't increase that.

Others think differently and thats fine but what grips my S**t is people telling other people what they are doing is dangerous.

I don't think there is any doubt that it is riskier to ride with headphones than without. The degree of risk is debatable and it might be argued that there is no risk at all. This is an old chestnut on this forum and on many others cycling sites. Yes, the perception of risk is yours and yours alone. Personally, I don't give a s**t if you smash yourself up. Unfortunately, when you are do it, there is a chance you will take someone with you. Hopefully you don't live near me ...

Nope, endlessly discussing it is worse.

I use one of these sometimes (got one a lot cheaper on ebay)

I find it provides a suprisingly good sound but you can still hear traffic, sirens, etc. not sure if i'd want to use it in an organised event though unless you are confident all around you would share your taste in music!! So maybe not good for your specific ride but not bad for training, weekend rides etc

Erm yes, great idea but probably best in a solitary session!. I was thinking about the professional tours where all the cyclists seem to be wired up and communicating with their teams. I would have thought that they would have to have a huge degree of concentration, day after day, at speed and in some fairly extreme situations. As well as being cut up regularly by their team vehicles, by escort bikes and overenthusiastic fans. They seem to cope ok ...

It's a well known fact that people with a sense missing have heightened abilities elsewhere. I bet the friend can either smell or taste threats from behind.
