Fitting tapered suspension forks?

Hi there,
I'm new to mountain biking and want to carry out an upgrade on the crappy RST forks that came on my bike!
I'm just wondering though if a suspension fork with a tapered steerer will fit directly on to a Cannondale Trail SL4 frame (2010 model)?
Will I need to change the headset to accomodate them?
After searching many forums I can't get a clear answer so an answer in simple terms would be much appreciated
Many thanks

To answer your 2 question. Yes and yes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Please can you explain further and tell me what headset i need to get?0

What steerer does the fork have at the moment? The First is a good fork, surprised you are having problems with it.0
-
The RST fork has a 1-1/8" steerer. Its just so heavy and after riding a bike with rock shox reba was so much better. If you could advise me what i need to change it would be great! link to bike below.

I wouldn't change a thing - I'd get a Reba with the same size steerer and just swap the crown race over. Would work out a lot cheaper/0

I have already bought the RS Reba RL with tapered steerer though. I got some brand new ones on ebay for £200

Yes, if the headtube is 49mm internal diameter - will have to measure.0
-
My head tube is 1.5 inches which is 38.1mm. Do you know of a headset that could fit?0
-
No, the steerer tube is 1.5 inch, the headtube could be completely different (a 1.5 headtube means it fits those forks, is not that size!).
You need to measure it up I am afraid.0 -
The headtube on my bike is definatly 1.5" i'm confused0
-
It does not measure 1.5 inch - if it did, the 1.5 inch steerer would not pass through! There is a gap around it. As above, a 1.5 headtube is the name for the size of steerer than can pass through, and not what it measures.
The inside diameter is probably 49mm, it is something you need to check.0 -
the bit on your frame where the headset and forks go through!
Remove the current headset and measure the INTERNAL diameter0 -
The head tube on my bike is definatly 1.5 inches. Have a look at the spec

IT DOES NOT MEASURE 1.5 INCHES THOUGH!!!! It is just the NAME for it. Sometimes called onepointfive standard. But Cannondale had their own system.
Measure the internal diameter like we keep saying!

Sorry you can tell i'm new to this hahaha! just measured the internal diameter and it measures 49mm.0

SPot on!
Should work then hehe ;-)0 -
Just check the insertion depth of the headset and head tube.
And don't forget th tools needed for the removal and fitting of the headsets.
Read Parktools."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Cheap & cheerful.
Has open ball races - not a problem as such but would be well worth fitting a headset cover to keep the grunge out.0 -
Could you recommend any other headsets that would be better? price range up to £600

disclaimer, I don't own any of these:
the superstar one you linked to
hope top - 1.5" - 1 1/8" stepdown

+
hope bottom 1.5" traditional

I have the superstar one, only just fitted it a few weeks back so can't tell you about long term reliability but initial reactions are good. Comes with 1.1/8th crown race and 1.5 crown race. Seems well sealed and uses cartridge bearings. Looks nice and importantly feels nice and smooth in action.0

Thanks guys this is very helpful. Just to confirm all of these headsets are for tapered steerers?0
