If wearing underwear with bib-shorts is such a no-no why does this page exist?

Because mountain bikers and commuters etc not wearing bibshorts need underwear?
or maybe just because not everyone buys into the concept and if there is a market for something they will sell it, regardless of merit.
I have to admit, I wore underwear for years when road cycling and never had any problems with it despite regularly doing 100km Audaxes or longer rides on occasion. I dont wear undderwear these days and dont have any problems now either. So its not such a big deal IMO.0 -
I have done several 100km rides including the Tour of Cambridge and the London Nightrider this year and always wear Calvin’s under my bib-shorts.
Never had a problem ever.0 -

None of that stuff is intended to be worn at the same time as bibs. It is for wearing under regular jeans or trousers.
Can we just clear up a misunderstanding - 'going commando' (aside from being a generally stupid expression) implies not wearing underwear at times when maybe you should. It does not apply to wearing cycling shorts, as these are intended to be worn next to the skin in any case.0 -
The generally accepted norm is no underwear under cycling shorts/bibs etc. I certainly don't wear any when cycling but it seems from posts here several do so probably lots of people do as only a minute fraction of cyclists post here!
So, if it works for you then carry on. Like with pretty much anything else in life, find out what works for you and do it.
Don't worry about fitting in with the crowd or God forbid following something as idiotic as "The Rules".0 -
Look at it this way would you wear pants under your swim wear? I suspect not because it's designed for that activity just like cycling bibsRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -
Thats not a great analogy as you wouldnt use cream with swimwear either but many do with cycling shorts. You could argue that if cycling shorts were perfectly designed for the activity then cream would be unnecessary as no chafing would occur.0

Underwear under bib shorts reminds me of the “Never Nude” movement. Strictly speaking, you should be wearing cut-off jean shorts under your bib shorts.0

If you stay in water for a prolonged period of time say swimming the channel or the Thames then you'd cover yourself in cream, I'd be surprised if many are slapping on cream for the average commute, or are they ...? Now there's a new threadRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

Keeps it from swinging about too much - not a problem for cycling, and keeps your trousers cleaner so you can wear them more than once - not really an issue with bike short since you're sweating the hell out of it anyway.
Take it from the people who ride bikes all day every day - pro riders. They certainly don't wear any, as this rather graphic picture shows:
.
Your shorts will have been designed to be ridden commando .
Is this Johnny Hoogerland? I remember watching that live, brutal crash. Poor bloke got the combative award that day and went into delayed shock on the podium. Hard as nails.
I don't wear underwear under my bibs.Cube - Peloton
Cannondale - CAAD100 -
That picture of Hoogerland still makes my blood run cold - horrific injuries.
I don't wear underwear under my shorts about 90% of the time. However, for colder weather riding, I use leg warmers with my bib shorts. I find however that the leg warmer grip strip that goes around my thighs is quite uncomfortable after a few hours. I have recently purchased a few pairs of Under Armour boxers that are very thin and perfectly comfortable under cycling shorts and also extend far enough to fit under the leg warmers. Works for me and is all very streamlined too - i.e no bunching or VPL :oops:Bianchi ImpulsoBMC Teammachine SLR02 01Trek Domane AL3“When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race. “ ~H.G.
