So, who thinks Ryder will pay for responding to J-Rod?

Pozzo making sure they go down at his pace  If Uran can hold in he could end up above Basso the way way Basso is riding. Suspect the Stelvio will be more to Basso's liking than the Mortirolo though.

Stelvio isnt very steep at all....would have thought it a climb that suits Ryder. Long and plodding. Think this stage may also be a let down like yesterday. I really hope I am proved wrong.

What's with the Movistar rider giving the Leaky rider a hand sling?

The Stelvio's last Giro appearance in 2005 saw an ill Ivan Basso lose 42 minutes climbing the east side, ending his title hopes.

1984. Polemica! Giro organizers claimed that Stelvio was impassable and changed the route. Laurent Fignon screamed foul and said the cancellation was to protect Italian Francesco Moser and prevent Fignon from winning the title. He claimed the route was ride-able (and snowless photos seemed to support his claim). But Moser would win the race.

You thought yesterday was a disappointment? Wow, tough audience. The favourites rode themselves to a stand still. I know you like spectacular attacks but that was attritional, destructive riding at its best as you coild see by the way riders crossed the line as individuals.

    Seriously?

    It was riveting!

It kicked off about 3km from the end. A very short period of standard riding hard. Nothing impressive or brave, just pretty standard. No attacks, just people riding hard and some cracking more than others. I watched the whole stage waiting and just got some excitement at the end. Thankfully Kreuziger showed something and made it more interesting.

I think J-Rod is more likely to pay for trying

Seriously tho, a true champion wont want to ride for anything but first and will be willing to lose to achieve that goal. I hope someone courageous gives it 150% early on the Stelvio.

Check this out. Some of the DS are so hard to please.

After stage 17, Astana’s directeur sportif Giuseppe Martinelli had expressed his disappointment. “In his two-year contract with Astana, he has only won a stage of the 2010 Giro del Trentino,” Martinelli said. “We expected more from him. I’m disappointed.”

Asked about the possibility of a stage win at one of the two big mountain stages, Martinelli answered: “We didn’t bring Kreuziger for a stage win. We brought him for the podium. We got the stage win we wanted with Paolo Tiralongo.”

How do you expect riders to attack when they are already at their limits? Kreuziger attacked and got a deserved win and there were various riders in the break that gave it a go. In these times of cleaner cycling the day long attack by a GC contender are over and done with.

How can anyone like this guy? Seriously, not a guy to back. Those riders not from Europe proper have no idea of the glory, the courageousness, the exploits, the history of this sport. Its just like a job for them.

    The way you win matters.

The thing about those sort of "death or glory" attacks is that theres nobody in the leading 5 who has any incentive to make one.

Why stuff yourself on a one in ten shot at glory when its much more likely your rivals will tire.

Euskaltel's DS's don't actually have driving licenses do they?

De Gendt only 5'40" down on GC. Riding away while the favourites mess about.

Does the time restriction on track standing apply on the road . I'd have thought the others would be keen to push on whilst Ryder has no team mates with him. Could be good for Cav's red jersey hopes though with quite a few riders in front of J Rod (assuming Cav didn't lose points yesyerday?)

Yeah this could start to get exciting:

Nieve and a teammate have joined the De Gendt group with Cunego and Amador. Losada and Serpa too.
Cataldo and Tschoop are also chasing.
