After seeing it on ITV news this eBay auction went from £5300 to £6500 in the time it took me to click on the link!
Is it right? Should those that have been given the "privilege" of bearing the flame and to keep a torch as a souvenir, be allowed to sell them on eBay within hours of them being used?
Discuss.

Up to £153,800 by the time I looked!
No it's simply wrong.
Greed.
But then again what price would it have to reach before you would be tempted to do the same...my isetta is a 300cc bike0 -
i see the sellers also selling a lilliput lane dormouse cottage, heheThe dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Surely extracting as much cash as possible from every opportunity is in the true spirit of the modern Olympics(tm)?
Nice design. Why not just have one torch and pass it on to the next bearer..?0 -
my understanding is that every torch bearer gets to buy a souvenir - is it £400 ? they dont get to keep the real one0
-
I bet you the bidder doesn't pay. I've seen other items, items auctioned for charity that get a lot of publicity go for a high price but then the winner just doesn't pay up. The bidders are drunken idiots that have no intention of paying that sort of money. Because it's eBay they don't realise they have entered into a legal contract to buy it.Summer - Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 Team

If we've made them pay for it, then it's there's to sell. Not a bad return if the winning bidder actually pays (which I doubt)Summer - Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 Team

Exactly. Completely in the spirit of the event.Purveyor of "up"0 -
They're not replicas but the actual torch the relay runner (walker in my ageing case) carries. At the end of each leg, after you've handed the torch on (metaphorically), it is disabled (don't know how) and, if you've paid your £199, it's yours.
My club is paying for mine and we're going to use it as an annual trophy, purpose to be decided. Sell it, be damnedOrganising the Bradford Kids Saturday Bike Club at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre since 1998

Ahh, but it's not a legal contract and you can't be sued for "breach of contract" if you don't pay for something
that you've won the bid on. Some legal eagle will correct me, I'm sure.0 -
Don't see why not. I've no idea what their circumstances are; they might really need the money. No way of knowing, is there.- - - - - - - - - -

this one is funny. You can bid for a 'picture' of the torch http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/London-2012-Olympic-Torch-Photo-/330736101504?_trksid=p4340.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DDLSL%252BSIC.NPJS%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%26otn%3D10%26pmod%3D330735585904%252B330735585904%26po%3D%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8553631200444412651#ht_500wt_9490

Theres a guy who lost 3 limbs(soldier) whos done the relay today. Now i'm prepared to bet that any sort of settlement/pension hes recieving for his injuries in the line of duty is shite. He very likely wouldnt do it, but if he chose to sell the torch i say good luck to him and i hope he makes a packet.
Although thinking about it the bastards would probably stop his pension - is it means tested??Death or Glory- Just another Story0 -
They'll regret selling them in the years to come I think.
What did you do with the olympic torch you ran with dad? Oh, I sold it on ebay the next day son!1998 Kona Cindercone in singlespeed commute spec

Cant see anyone being that arsed in years to come, or maybe only if they realise they cold have made even more if they held onto it for a few years.0 -
The picture of the torch is now up to over £10,000!!!! Bloody hell. Surely this can't be real, can it?

Don't see the problem in selling it.
You've bought it it's yours to do as you like.
Hell if I paid £199 and could get thousands I would.0
