It's going to end in tears

I've found an alternate and slightly silly route into work:

http://g.co/maps/t85qt

We normally go up Gotham Rd and turn right into Bunny Lane. Only I found that the Google van had actually travelled the full distance up Lantern Lane; which I thought was a bit odd as it looked like a dirt road/ track thing.

So I take a look at it and it's doesn't look bad - bit of a laugh to try it out, and mention it to one of my commuting buddies.

He's now obsessed with trying this bloody track out tomorrow morning, it's been absolutely p*ssing it down for days here and looking up the track tonight, it's knee deep in mud.

This bit: http://g.co/maps/4kg79

This track is as long and as steep as Bunny Hill which we can do 40 down.

I've got the helmet cam with me.... this is either going to be hilarious or the last time I add anything to this forum.

Oh, and my mate is the one who keeps having clipless moments, and we've only got road tyres fitted, and did I mention the mud, or the hill?

God help me.

I once tried to cross a wet, muddy field on my MTB once. In theory no problem only it was running slicks at the time. It didn't work.........

But then you know this already anyway........

Mud, slicks, steep downhill & clipless moments. Make your mate take the lead and film it. PLEASE!!!

Got to see this, at best you'll get filthy!
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    It was.

    Christ that was hilarious

NO falls, and frankly I'm slightly in awe of my mate who cycled through BB deep mud and water while clipped in and never put his foot down once.

At one point we HAD to stop as the hill up was too steep and wet to get any purchase with our tyres. We just stood there spinning on the spot - we were forced to walk the last 100 yards to the top cos it was impossible to start moving.

Then there was the hill down. This was the point when disk brakes would've been a GREAT idea. Pity we didn't have any

The rims and brakes were caked in wet mud and we were accelerating down the hill for ages before the damn brakes cleaned enough to slow us down.

There were sections where the water washed over the bottom bracket and my foot was complete submerged - I really don't know how well the vid will LOOK, but it'll SOUND hysterical - The memory of the pair of us stood on top of the ridge in the pouring rain, covered in mud laughing like loons is one I'll keep for a long time :D

The last section was the worst... we hadn't taken into account that the wash off the hills would run down the clearest stretch, so we basically cycled through a stream for a good 2-300 yards - completely mud strewn so we couldn't see what we were cycling into and dodging fecking big rocks which loomed like solid grey icebergs.

Beautiful - and that was a commute to work

To work? I assumed you do it on the way home so that you wouldn't have to ride home in wet and muddy kit.

The vid may not come out - all it takes is one strategically placed raindrop to ruin the whole thing and it was p*ssing it down. I will check tonight and see what it looks like, if there is anything worth while I'll post it, I promise.

We've just checked the vid on the phone (SD Card) it's clear and flipping funny. My running commentary with comedy expletives just adds to the atmosphere.

I need to add btw - we were running our tyres are max PSI - my mate's 32c at 85 psi and my 28c at 100. We really didn't think it through properly.

My cycling mate had to take a detour to get back home last night:

    This is him explaining why:

Now you know why they put knobblies on CX bikes - you're mad both of you - great vid though - I'm supposed to be audaxing through the New Forest tomorrow - have a feeling it might be a similar experience

You need to buy some MTFU in black rubber. Slick centre for the road with knobbly sides to help in the slippery bits.
Well done though, bloody good effort on road tyres.

looks fun! I sometimes go though some woods nr me on the single speed get some odd looks from the MTB/CXers.

A MTB would be overkill for that, just some CX tyres back on though might well loose the sillyness of it.

I do have some CX tyres and I was going to fit them, but it would've been boring and we would lose the sense of adventure!

Besides it would've been slow on the roads then.....

Get something like the ones I linked to. Reasonably slick in the centre, but with enough knobbles on the sides to help out in conditions like that.
I must confess I'd rather take that route if I could, looked great.
