HOLY MOLY Moomaloid! That person appears to have posted all of the 89 C4 coverage.

I used to know it word for word, so I need to revisit now.

Am I right in thinking you guys all know the entire '89 Tour off by heart?

I do. I've not seen that coverage for about 15 years, but watching it now I know what Phligget is going to say next. I must watch the time trial where Lemond bust out the tri-bars to hear Sherwen saying they'd "close your chest"

  • Chickasmith has been my god for a while, some stuff on his channel I thought I'd never see again ... but is it better all left as a memory, I wonder??

Is good for the young'ens like me.

I was 1 when the '89 Tour was kicking off.

Yes. It was an astonishing race.

This is great, cheers Moomaloid/Iain! This wasn't the first year I watched the Tour, but it was the first where I really understood what was going on enough to really enjoy it. And what a race!

And it takes me back to taping the stages and then watching them over and over in the weeks after the Tour as there was no coverage of anything else. Now you just move onto the next race. Just watching the Alpe d'Huez stage and you can see how Sherwen slowly developed his commentary.

"...Greg's got to dig really deep into his reserves and try to get all the courage he's got..."

Not quite as slick as a "dig deep into a suitcase full of courage", but it's getting there!
  • I was 1 when the '89 Tour was kicking off.

That's no excuse for not watching!

It's bitter sweet seeing Fignon in action in his pomp.

Trying to find the episode where they interviewed Breukinks wife. Rick would LOVE those 80's Dutch chicks.

Yeah, of course ... it was more philosophical pondering on my part

They were on Alpe d'Huez, so it would be sometime after that.

Rick, you're not allowed to post again till you've watched all those videos. Much to learn you have, our young apprentice.

Just watching 1989 Stage 19, funnily enough the line I remember is when Phil was talking about them stopping to cool off in the lake.

    Brilliant stuff.

I always loved that stage. Especially when Fignon tries to get Lemond to work, he doesn't, wins the sprint and Fignon congratulates him.

  • Did anyone see the Tour of Romandy Stage on eurosport yesterday ? I still don't understand the nuances of cycle racing but there was an awesome breakaway and chase at the end of the stage.

Welcome to the beautiful world of pro-cycling :).

That particular stage was discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=40002&t=12849943&start=220

All I shall say is, if you think that was exciting, there should be a few clips on here you'll absolutely love!

Take a look at this finish to the Tour of Turkey two days ago - the Omega Pharam quick step rider's been in the break all day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... dPHTMawyug The commentator loses it a bit, in a good way. (though not stricly 'the most exciting attack ever' - it's good fun :))
  • lol whoops that was the stage I meant. I watched them one after another and obviously mixed 'em up.
  • How about this as the most disappointing attack ever?

After a couple of years at shouting at the TV it then became quite clear why Beloki hadn't tried attacking Armstong before!

hehe maybe the big schlong painted on the road at 2:55 was for him. :D

19, should've been a nothing stage in the lead up to Paris, but a break with all the favourites gets away... Amazing. Never happens today much does it? :)

Remember that Fignon had tried the Scott aero bars but Guimard had told him he didn't need them. Ahh memories of screaming at the tv as Fignon had taken the turn at the top of the Champs-Élysées and was weaving badly has he gave everything towards the line... Ligget shouting.. "He's bouncing off the barriers... he's lost the Tour De France!" Ahhhh gooesebumps... :)

I too taped every stage of '89 and the following years on VHS tapes. I remember saving my pocket money to buy a pack of 6, 4 hour tapes and filling them. I ended up taping over every spare bit of video tape we had in the house. Much to my parents disgust. In fact they are in the process of binning all those tapes only now... crazy...

Fair enough...it lasted hours so perhaps not quite what original poster of thread meant but it was exciting in the last 20 miles when it looked like the bunch would win.
