  • When we did ours I arranged for us to stay
    Calais

    Amiens

    Paris

chose these as they were all alligned to the same hotel chain and we did it as a group booking for 30 people

The calais one is literally 5 mins off the ferry

Amiens is just going out of the town, but sets you up nicely for the ride to Paris

Paris whilst not the best placed was easy enough to jump on the metro across to get the eurostar back home.

Have you got routes sorted yet? I could upload the garmin routes we used if you like to look at.
The best day was on th way to Amiens it was simply a beauytiful day in the saddle incorporating a stop off at Amiens war cemetary. Truly moving.

They are all nice hotels and the food was good. we even arranged to have later meals with them and they made sure that the dietary needs we had were sorted out. It made life much easier and meant we weren't messing about finding places to eat.

  • Thankyou for your advice. Ive found the eurobookings site usefull.

The files of the route would be good to look at if possible.
  • Quick Q for you guys, or anyone that has done this before...
what do you do for bike security each night? don't really fancy bringing my Fagheddaboudit on a trip this long. was thinking about the possibility of bringing the bike into the hotel rooms?!

Yes, I did that last year - or asked the staff to store it somewhere for me (usually a storeroom with a lock)
  • Do you find you need to pre-arrange it, or just roll up and ask?
    Cheers!

No, just ask when checking in. It's France so they're very bike friendly in general. Although, to be fair to British hotels, they're just as accommodating

Sorry I'm a bit late with these.

1st day to Dover the garmin had a minor malfunction so the end is mising but we basically hogged the Mway then went across at folkestone to dover. Gives you a killer climb near the end but so worth it.

    This was to thr hotel

2nd day the best day out of the lot, simply stunning, awe inspiring, humbling and beautiful

And the last day into Paris another nice day through french chateaux and poppy fields. Paris is an eye opener. It's so busy yet no hassle. Cars moved for us and let us through. So unlike England!!!

  • Hijacking this thread again, but I suppose its good to have it all in one place for future users...

So doing L2P next month, wanted to do the Dieppe/Av verte route, but the ferry times are seriously inconvenient, so it looks like we need to go a different route. Problem is, the other routes don't seem to be half as scenic. Reading things like “The private companies that have sprung up to organise many of these rides often add to the pain by steering their victims through the grim windswept plains of the Nord Pas de Calais.” is a real turn off for the Calais route.

Am I missing something, or can anyone recommend a nice scenic route other than Dieppe?

    Cheers.

Last year we did London to Portsmouth, Overnight to St. Malo, St. Malo to Laval, Laval to Ferte Bernard, Ferte Bernard to Paris, 4 days, was supposed to be around 360 odd miles but we ended up doing nearly 400, final day was 123 miles.

The route was really beautiful, plenty of Châteaus, fantastic roads.

Check out the route at http://www.velonuts.co.uk/2011route.html

We enjoyed it so much that we are doing it again next year, last week in June.
  • Cheers Velonutter, will check out what that route has to offer.
Ideally we're shooting for a 3 day trip so it's prob a bit heavy on the daily distances for us.
  • I'm not having that! The second day from Calais to Amiens was a beautiful days riding. We spent time at amines war cemetery, rode along a Roman road, rode through crecy. There were poppy fields, crater strewn hillsides along the coast that took your breath away as you imagined the conflict the coast had seen.

It was universally held to be the best days riding of the whole 3 days by the whole.group.
