    Best decision. Those wheels can be replaced when you trash them.

    :D I spoke to Merlin Cycles before I decided on the tyres instead and they said the same thing. Build your skill level up then do the wheels. Only went with LBS instead of Merlin for the tyres due to the deal I got.

    Friend of a friend in Surrey has some new Mavic XM 317 wheels on Formula Hubs. Would these be a good upgrade or no better then the Alex Zx 24s?

    Those wheels won`t be much better than what you have.I`d stick with what you have for now.

    Alex rims are fine, but a little heavy if anything. The Cube wheels are based on Formula & Shimano hubs (IIRC) so you arent really getting much of an upgrade with those.
