Elbow Bursitis

I knew my training for a week in the Pyrenees was going too well...

Last Thursday after spinning (last session before summer club nights outside) my left elbow decided it wanted to blow itself up like a balloon and seize up. At first I thought it was down to a chipped elbow or stress fracture, having had an off about a month ago, but been told by the doc that x-ray is fine. However cant grip the bars with any kind of force and braking (especially on descent) is pretty impossible.

Anyone else had a "bursitis" in the elbow, which is what the doc called it? On 2 sets of antibiotics at the moment in case its infected but wondering what sort of down time I am looking at?

At least ive got the turbo to chug along with, even though only with one hand

Following a crash last May I had a bursitis in my right knee for almost 3 months. It kept me off my bike for most of that time as it hurt as soon as did anything more than easy spinning. The good (?) news is that the doc said that I wasn't doing any damage to the joint by riding but it would delay the healing.

I asked about draining it but my doctor refused on the grounds that there was no infection (white blood cell count was normal and he gave me antibitics 'just to be sure') and that piercing the bursa may intorduce infection and lead to further complications.

It's a PITA but just rest up!

Wear loose clothes or short sleeves. I found that sitting down in jeans really aggravated it.

I had bursitis in my left elbow a few years back. I was on a weeks sailing course and the last couple of days it got really sore, then driving home I could barely change gear due to the pain. By the time I got to the GP it was touch and go as to whether I needed hospital treatment as it was infected. The two antibiotics + paracetamol and ibuprofen did the trick though.

As I remember it I was off work for about a week. Once the infection was under control it didn't take long to recover. Mind you I wasn't cycling at the time...
