have you lot lost your minds?! they are fugly as hell!!

as for the zaskar, it started as a do it all hardtail, not an xc bike... ergo it should be built more like a modern all-rounder rather than a race bike.

It started very much as an XC bike! Riders were using them as harder riding hardtails, and the legend was born - GT beefed them up ans slackened the angles slightly.

Got to remember these bikes are fifteen years old! And still look more modern than some (never mind ride better!)

I was quite entertained by the recent coparison between the Lobo and Fury on here. That's a name that should have been kept! The Athertons should be riding new Carbon LOBOs!

I really wanted a thermoplastic Lobo back in the day. Sure they snapped, but damn they were good while they lasted.

True, but then "hardcore" forks back then, like Judy DH, had 75mm travel and weighed 3.5lbs. There wasn't the huge range in mid range forks like there is now.

I do like the look of the old Lobo! And STS:

GT were streets ahead of the rest for sus and frame tech in the 90s. Sure, some failed ;-). But they pushed the boundaries.
    Drool!
I actually wanted an LTS for ages, before settling on my old Marin Wolf-ridge.

The guy that got me into biking rode an LTS so naturally, it's always been on a pedastal for me. I rode the closest thing I could get to an LTS, a Saracen Raw II...

The Full sus Zaskar represents everything the original hardtail did.

It's not a XC whippet, it's not a DH bike, it does a bit of everything well but now in comfort.

GT Zaskar isn't just a name fixed in an era, it's an ethos that is being re-invented by GT but in a modern form with all the creature comforts that progress enables. I take it all of you would be happy living in a cave smashing bits of rock together 'keeping it real' with your Yo eddy and Ritchey for comfort. FWIW I own a 1999 Zaskar LE and a 2011 Zaskar Carbon, both are very nice bikes but the carbon one is something else with a frame weight of only 1100g and the one I'd rather be in the hills on, oh and it looks shit hot with it's metallic pewter paint job.

GT have always been ahead of the curve with the RTS, LTS, I-Drive and ID suspension designs. Most other bike brands are now just clones of one another, even Santa Cruz carbon frames are now made in China by people with little hands.
With the Atherton family now onboard, I'm sure their input will help create some mega bikes in the near future.

I agree that the zaskar fs is not a true zaskar, but its a damn sexy bike. I suppose however that its like ford renaming the Orion the Escort towards the end, at the end of the day, does it matter what its called?

Of course it matters. You'd never manage to fill a hotel room with a dozen Orion girls.

A name shouldn't matter, but GT have named this bike a Zaskar to take advantage of what it was 15 years ago. They know it will sell more than if called Marathon, or ID XC.

    You sir, have a challenge

and SS thats what I meant, it shouldn't matter as it would be the same bike no matter what, but like you say, helps shift numbers
