Recommended Fitness Schedules?

This year I have promised myself that I am going to do both the Great North Cycle (60 miles approx) and Cyclone 2012 (ride B 66 miles or possibly Ride C 104 miles). I only just started road cycling back after Christmas as I got the bike for a present. As a 15 year old, I will obviously need to follow some sort of fitness schedule such as a certain amount of miles on the bike a week, push ups, sit ups, squats etc. The rides are in July and August of this year and I need to get ship shape for them.

Has anyone got any fitness schedule that you would recommend me to follow for the next months?

Please let me know, I will need to get fit for these events! 8)

At your age - I would just say ride your bike as much as you can! It shouldn't be that tough.

Depending on how many miles you can do now - aim to up that length of ride each week until you can do 60 miles with ease (most riders can do that distance easily). Getting up to 100 will be harder - but general rule of thumb is - if you can do 80 miles, then you can do 100 when pushed.

Forget squats. Push ups and sit ups are OK if you think you need to, but really just focus on riding your bike as much as you can. Get used to being in the saddle for 3 hours at a time.

And most of all - ENJOY IT!!

    Good luck.

Just ride the bike as much as you can really. Work on extending your long ride at the weekend gradually. 60 miles should be fine for you with a bit of training.

Try and get some rides with others. At 15 you should very quickly build up stamina for longer rides. Always take something to eat with you because you will get energy loss, the bonk. At 15 I was knocking off 200 + mile rides over a week end. My mates at that age rode from Oxfordshire down to Lands End for a holiday. I, at times, only had a short time in the evenings to ride so I would knock off 10 miles as fast as I could which helped a lot. I would plan a ride to meet up with club members on a Sunday for tea. This invariable meant a 40 or 50 mile ride without a computer, just a map. Also, the bikes were not like today's so you have got a good start. Good luck and enjoy it. :)

If you want to be a strong rider you have to do strong things.
However if you train like a cart horse you'll race like one.
