Worst kept secret in the peloton? :P
Most pundits have already handed it to Cavendish... :P0 -
Anyone else see this from Millar on Twitter?Discussing MSR, led @KlierAndreas to regale us with Oscar Friere playing tennis outside his hotel window before winning stage at Downunder
Klier was laying in bed exhausted, legs in the air, finding it difficult to understand how he would finish the race. And there outside...
... his window was Oscar, prancing around the court like a teenager, with a rotation of different Katusha staff challenging him. Legend.

I'm a Freire fan, but have just this moment read a quote on cyclingnews in which he takes a fairly tough stance on the Contador ban, condemns those who fail to admit guilt etc and then in the next breath says he prefers Valverde anyway and that he admires him. Legend? yes. Although I often get the impression he isn't the brightest spark.0 -
Benati is my dark horse.
2nd in the Tirreno TT - will have the chance to follow while Cancellara does something, and worst case Canc's not a bad lead out man!
Boonen's been given a McLaren ala Cavendish. In the interview he slates the first specialised he rode.
Standard.

I know this race is often a bit of a dissapointing spectacle, but I can't help but be excited.
I'm already suffering withdrawal symptoms after last weeks Tirreno/Paris-Nice double bill.
I'd love it to go crazy on the Poggio, but I can't see past Cav. Any attacker is going to have to get a serious gap to avoid Cav et al bridging back on the decent or the run in just like in 2009. Winning this race in the WC jersey has been a target for him since he won it then. I wonder if teams will try and create splits earlier in the race a bit like we saw last year, but surely Sky will factor this in and keep him near the front in th last 50KM."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0 -

Does the Sky team selected for MSR have the firepower to turn it into a snoozefest?“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0

No, but then they don't need to. There will be plenty of team who will fancy their chances in a sprint to bring back any moves that getaway.0 -

Who?
Katusha?
QS?
BMC won't, Radioshack won't, liquigas won't, lampre won't, can't think of any others who will.0 -
OK, lets say Nibali gets a small gap with an attack on the Poggio, any team who has a sprinter near the front of the race will chase, otherwise you'll be racing for second. They shouldn't, better to leave it to Sky to chase, but they won't, they'll chase.0

Not having a chance in a sprint against Cav hasn't stopped some of those squads from working with Sky for a bunch gallop in the past, particularly if they have no representation in the break. Theres always a chance that His Royal Manxness will get boxed in / fall off.
Big problem with the finish is that there is around 3km from the end of the Poggio top the finish. Unless escapees have 20 or 30 seconds at the end of the descent, they're not going to hold off any reasonably-sized bunch.'This week I 'ave been mostly been climbing like Basso - Shirley Basso.'0 -

Good interview here about M-SR with Cavendish and Eisel. It's good, honest.

Had another look at the Poggio profile last night. I'd forgotten just how easy it is - miracle that anyone gets away on it at all!
Got to be Cav for the win.0 -

A climb doesn't have to be that long or high or vicious, just enough to neutralise the peloton advantage over the lone rider, no headwind and some cheeky blind corners are advantageous also...."I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

It's veery twisty too.
It's virtually interval style efforts rather than solid state climbing.0 -
