I'm on the verge of getting my first Garmin / HRM to assist with my training but as I also run, I'm considering a Forerunner 305. Anyone out there have experience of using a Forerunner on a bike and if so, what do they think? Tia

I have a 405 which predates my road bike. I use it with the handlebar adapter, HRM strap and speed cadence sensor.
Its fine but not particularly cheap compared to cheap HRM and computer - if I just wanted it for bike then I would question if I would be better of with an edge. If, on the other hand like you, want to run as well then it is a neat solution.
Disadvantages would be
1)Can be fiddly to adjust stuff when riding
2) pain taking it on and off with the strap
3)Battery life seems to max at about 5 hrs if you are using Wireless for HRM and GPSMy bikes

I have a forerunner 405, works fine with a HRM & cadence sensor, but battery life is short at about 6 hours. Also have the Edge 200, and swap between all the bikes, and had I not already had the 405, would have had a Edge 500 and had a bike specific one over the 4050

The Forerunner 301XT works better for on/off bike use since you can get a QR strap and mount for it meaning that you can mount it to your bike without the strap. The bike mount is actually the same 1/4 twist one as used by the Edge 500.More problems but still living....0

I've got a Forerunner 305 which is now used pretty exclusively on the bike. Brilliant bit of kit - my battery lasts 8+ hours, logs all you need including HR and cadence with the appropriate sensors, and can be used to navigate around a route, albeit basic. I've had a Forerunner 305 for 3 years now.
I wouldn't be without it.
For me, there is nothing that this won't do and there is no reason to look to upgrade.
It is less intrusive that the Edge series of 'computers', yet does just about everything the likes of the 500 does and even with 4 data screens on show is easily readable.
If I were to upgrade, my first choice would be the the 310xt - purely as I do triathlons and would like to use it for swim training.
If you buy the right bike mount kit, the unit fits directly to the bike.Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50
