    Trek EX8 2008 2nd hand was £850
    I added XT brakes £180
    Hope seat qr £20
    Crud Catcher £8
    SLX double cranks £90
The spec was barely original when I got it so whoever I got it from must've spent a good £3000, I got me a bargain.

My Santacruz VP free has cost around £1000, mostly 2nd hand but a few new bits. Biggest bargain was a Hope bulb 20mm front wheel with ex729 rim for £30
    YT Wicked 160 ltd
    Cotic BFe
    DMR Trailstar
    Canyon Roadlite

Phoar, there's some anal calcluations going on in this thread!
I will only add my most impressive purchase; Ellsworth Moment MKII + RP23 + DHX5 + Titanium spring = 350 quid. It's not free... but it's a fraction of the RRP :D In total, around 2.5k between the Torque and Moment which I think is pretty good considering the builds.
  • My latest bike a Giant Anthem X cost ,me £770 via the classifieds,my Defy Advanced road bike cost me £820 via ebay, and my trusty XTC cost me £530 new in 2006,though it has had everything replaced since I had it,though many bits were upgraded fairly cheaply and secondhand such as Reba forks for £150 on the classifieds, and an XT/717 wheelset for £70.The XT groupset was a freebie courtesy of a WMB prize draw!

The Defy recently had a wheel and tyre upgrade, with Ksyrium Equipes and Pro race 3s courtesy of a Merlin deal which cost £235.I`l recoup some of that by selling the original wheels.

I try to buy the bike as close to the spec as I want then to sell off unwanted bits and use them to fund upgrades.

I`m not sure if I would bother buying a new bike now............

I wait for someone else to buy it new and suffer the depreciation!

Cube Sting with upgrades ~£2200 (RRP inc upgrades ~£4200)

    Marin Team Titanium ~£750

    Orange Clockwork ~£700

    KHS Montana Pro ~£500

The list of parts for each of the retro builds is long and long forgotten, but I do know the rough figures for what each bike cost.

Almost all of the upgrades on all of my bikes are pre owned or ex demo parts which keeps the costs much lower

My enduro was £2000, paid RRP but got £200 in vouchers from shop and £250 light from Specialized deal. Currently standing with about £500 worth of upgrades with about £500 more (XT brakes and 1x10 stuff) in the cupboard waiting to be fitted.

My Genesis was £1000 but bought via the bike to work scheme under the old rules. There's about £100 worth of bits in the cupboard waiting to be fitted to get it rolling smoothly again after about 2 years heavy use and neglect. Just a chain, chain rings, cassette and cables but fitting like for like so can't call it an upgrade. The mud guards were though.

    2011 Stumpjumper Comp FSR

    RRP £2,000

    Paid £1,399

Additions no more than £100 so far, just winter tyres and some clipless pedals to replace the ones on my old bike that was stolen.

I think it was worth way more than i paid for it :D
  • right, ive mustered the inclination to re type this after losing it all earlier...

all the below is S/H from ebay or classifieds, either on here or the 'other' forum, unless stated.

    Frame: 09 Intense 6.6 SlopeStyle w/Fox DHX 5 £760
Forks: Lyrik coil 160 u-turn £185 and 05 boxxer teams for DH, also £185
Bars: Easton Monkeylite DH £65 (as new)
Stem: Specialized enduro 65mm £free from my spares box (for DHm Answer minus 1 DM stem £44 new)
Headset: Cane Creek XX reducer £40
    Grips: Specialized enduro £9
Brakes: XTR M970 with yumeya res caps £140
Shifters: XT M770 £50 (one new one S/H)
Front Mech: XT M771 £21 new or DMR chain cage for DH £15
Rear Mech: XT M770 £35 new
Chain Device: MRP XCG Triple bash taco type affair £7.50
Seat: SDG Bel Air SL I beam £27
Seat Post: SDG I beam Carbon £30
Seat Post Clamp: Intense £free with frame
Chainset XTR M970 £185 (for DH, RaceFace Atlas AM and FSA single ring £25, best purchase of the build methinks, given their age, condition and RRP!!)
    Chain: £15
    Cassette: XTR M970 £35
    Pedals: Azonic Xtension £20
    Bottom Bracket: XT £8.50
Rims: Mavic 729 £100 (new) seems expensive but got the wheels built for free by the lbs
    Spokes: Black DB £30
Hubs: Chris King ISO 20mm front, 10mm bolted rear £400
    Tubes: 2 for £4 at Asda :)
Tires: Panaracer fire FR 2.4 at the mo, but its a rare day i spend more than £30 an end on tyres

so, once all the misc bits like mounts and cables etc are added up i reckon about £2.2 to £2.4k depending on spec, which i reckon is ok as if i was to price it up with the cost when new i'd be looking around the £5k mark which is why i dont think ill ever buy a new bike from a shop again!

My slayer cost me approx. £2200 (RRP would have been MUCH more than this), most of the parts were new though by the time i was done upgrading, I think the only parts that were second hand were frame, seatpost/clamp and shock. Pic in my sig.

I'm also building up an orange 223 soon hopefully, full build should come to around £700, mostly all second hand.

  • Plenty!

    It's actually hard to say.

Well, the Karma is an easy one. £640. Off the peg bike on offer from CRC (£600), plus MG1 pedals from ebay, and nitrile grips from poshbikes.

The Edison is more complicated. It cost £1,800 new. Since then I've changed the chainset, wheels, shifters, cables, tyres (several times), grips, seatpost, saddle, chain, cassette and outers. Cost at around an additional £900.
It's currently sat in the garage stripped down to just the bare frame, waiting for me to sink another couple of grand down it upgrading to 10sp, getting a new paint-job, more new wheels and upgrading the fork, plus new bars, pedals, grips, tyres etc

I've been putting off adding it all up but here is a rough list-

Gary Fisher Wahoo 2009 Disc initial cost ~£400

Shimano Brakes Disc SLX Disc Brakes M665 Rear - Post Mount - LH Lever
Shimano Brakes Disc SLX Disc Brakes M665 Front - Post Mount - RH Lever
Shimano Brakes Disc Adaptors Mount Adaptor Front Post to IS 180mm 74mm Post to IS 180mm
Shimano Brakes Disc Rotors XT Disc Rotor 6-Bolt RT76 160mm 6-Bolt
Shimano Brakes Disc Rotors XT Disc Rotor 6-Bolt RT76 180mm 6-Bolt
    £240

    Wellgo MG1 Magnesium MTB/BMX Platform Pedals £30
    Charge Spoon £20

Comes to around £2000 but this doesn't include the cost of all the parts that have worn out or broken and been replaced. It also doesn't iclude the cost of the bits I've bought and never fitted and all the other accessories such as clothing/helmets/tools etc.

The way I see it is it's not costing as much as my car and I use my bike lot more than I use my car.

Canyon XC 7.0 cost £1634 delivered put new superstar grips on £10.99, replaced BB £24.99, 2 x sets of SS pads £5.50 a pair, XTR pedals £90. Swapped the saddle, bars, wheels, gears and drivetrain but the replacements were all 2nd hand stuff thats come off other bikes I own, out of the spares box or been traded off friends. For example the saddle was swapped with a mate who wanted a white saddle.

  • I want a go of this. Though it's a bit complicated.

The end result is a Yeti SB-66. But getting there took some work.

I bought a Lapierre Spicy for £1950 off eBay. It snapped not awfully long after and Lapierre were not helpful about replacing the frame, so my insurers offered me a choice. I'd insured it at £2500.

    That got me:

Yeti SB-66 frame, and the following bits to fit it.
    Chris King headset and reducer
    XTR cables
    Replacement XTR shifter
    XT front mech
    BB70B bracket
    XT brake cables

From that two grand Spicy the following came over:
    Fox Float 36 RC2 forks
    Mavic Crossmax SX wheels
    Deore XT brakes
    Saint rear mech
9 speed XT double drivetrain and cranks and whatnot
    Easton Havoc stem
    Syncros riser bars
    E-thirteen bashguard
    Blackspire Stinger chainguide

    I've added:
    Rockshox Reverb post £220
Gobi XM saddle £45 second hand
    Superstar Nano flats £43
    ODI Ruffian grips £20
    ISCG tab adaptor US$30

And sold the Fox Float RP2 and KS i900 dropper post off the old bike for a total of about £180.

So, I think I've spent about £2,100 on it in the current state, which I feel like I've done pretty well with. Plus tyres as another £50 on some on-one schwalbe deal. And I'm sure I'll have forgotten something. Edit: I probably would have to calculate insurance premium spend to get a true reflection in fact! Err, no thanks!

Once I add in tools, locks, bike storage shed, clothes, gloves, shoes, petrol money spent getting out on a ride it probably gets to a very big number. But subtracting for how much I enjoy it makes it all worthwhile!
