More for the custom builders and part swappers really - if you add up all the bits you paid, what does it come to? Think it was a good deal and worth it overall? Please say if bits were 2nd hand!

hmmmm we talking RRP or what we actually paid?

    E-thirteen Lg1+ and 34t guide ring - £150
new bb - £40 (complete rip off from the LBS, they do like to sting you for stuff you need!)
new XT M785 brakes and Icetech Rotors - £190 from rose and £10 to swap the hoses.

the maxlight came to just over a grand back in 2006, and thats had all sorts since then...

    second hand hope mini's £80
    charge spoon £20
    revelations £300
second hand but brand new DT wheels - £120
new bars stem, seatpost - £90

Schwalbe Muddy Mary tyres - £70
    Superstar Nano pedals - £45
FSA Gravity Gap stem - £30
Push tuning on the Van R shock - £150
    Offset shock bush - £10

    Still to come:

Some parts on mine are taken from other builds, and have actually ended up costing me nothing (free take offs!) when I have sold the old bike on at a profit! But as it stands, with some of the RRPs in brackets as estimates:

Zaskar Carbon Team frame, with FSA headset and seatclamp: £600 (1099)
    Reba SL: £140 s/h (500)
    XTR wheelset: £130 s/h (700)
Deore Brakes and XT ice rotors: free! (200)
    Speedking tyres: £45 (70)
Exotic carbon ti seatpost: £35 (55)
    Wellgo MG1: £25 (45)
Gobi Ti saddle: was given by a friend (70)
    Noir carbon chainset: free! (350)
    XTR front mech: free! (70)
XTR Shadow Plus rear mech: WMB test item (170)
    SLX/XT shifter: £15 (60)
    1050 cassette: free! (65)
    SRAM 10spd chain: free! (25)
    Ritchey tubs: £6 (10)
    Cabling: free!
Easton MonkeyLite SL Carbon bar: free! (110)
    KCNC stem: free! (30)
    Bonty foam grips: free! (10)
  • I think I have hovering around the 1800 Euros mark for my Cotic. Got the frame for 300 used (amazing deal for here in Austria), managed to transfer quite a few bits over from my old Merida, but those will be switched out eventually as well.

So, as far as I know:

300 for the frame ( Cotic Soul)
600 for the forks ( Pace RC41 Fighter)
260 for front wheel ( Custom built)
40 for the bash guard (FSA)
80 for front derailleur (Sram XO)
    90 for rear derailleur (XT)
70 for a casette (shimano SLX, I think)
    70 for Exotic Bars
    70 for Spesh Stem
50 for Deore brakeset ( will be changed soon)
About 40 on various small bolts and things I needed
    60 for a Rotwild seatpost
90 for some new Shimano DX pedals
45 for some KCNC bar ends
20 for some Hope bar protectors
    20 for hope seat clamp.

Not sure if that is everything, but I think at least.

Up eventually will be new brakeset, new rear wheel, new tyres, new crankset.

Stumpy FSR Comp '10, purchased in Oct '09.

Bike £1445 (RRP £1899) - Got this heavily discounted due to bike shop cockup :)
Fork upgrade from open bath RL to FIT RLC £235
    Wellgo MG1s £30
    XT rear cassette £32
    Sram X0 rear derailleur £75
    Hope hoops with crests £335

Was it all worth it? Hell yeah, not upgraded too much, mainly for weight purposes and the rear derailleur was only upgraded because the X9 had a pretty bad reaccuring fault.

Best upgrade was the forks, followed closely by the wheels.

A lot of parts are passed on from bike to bike, for example a lot of the parts came from the 456 when it wasn't just built from spare parts. Unfortunately none of that money includes the on going maintenance that comes with riding your bike for College, I have such a hard life don't I

Both bikes do me really proud and it's great having such supportive parents/friends

I don't have a list, but I did make one a while ago and only kept the totals. For my SC Heckler, I worked out I paid about £1300 in it's original confirguration (that was with 2nd-hand forks and frame and upgraded shock). RRP would have been about £2500. Since then I've changed some bit though: new forks, drivetrain, cockpit. Splitting the difference of part removed and saved or sold, I'd say it's up to having cost about £1600 now, but the RRP would have been more like £3000 (I got an incredible deal on forks).

My Inbred cost about £850, all new parts, with an RRP of £1100-1200. That bike is pretty much sold though, and the next will be roughly the same value: cost ~1000, with an RRP of 1500-ish.

Aaarghh I just spent ages typing it out and totting it up only to lose the post!!!!

    Sod doing it all again.

Never paid for a pair of pedals, always been given them as gifts.

    The short version:
    Orange - £699.50 (780)
The modifications £750 near enough, it's a lot of money... but being over a couple of years I haven't noticed it too much (worth considerably more than that, easily over 1ks worth if going on RRPs)
Made back £140 from selling old parts.
    Total cost £1310ish

    Road bike £600 (1000)
    New bar tape £12
    Computer £28

    The 456
    £1487.86 exactly.

Don't want to think about what I've spent on tyres, brake pads, grip cartridges, tubes etc. over the years though

I'm happy with the orange and the amount I've spent on it, aside from the the forks, which to be fair are a fair enough upgrade over the toras, and the wheels (which are nothing but tarty blingyness and I only bought because I got paid at the wrong moment  ) everything else was bought when the old parts had broken or worn out, not just for the sake of it.

The 456 cost more than I wanted it to, but comparing it to their standard builds at the time, and the fact I'd built it to my taste and I love the way it rides I'm not too bothered. Having said that I'm well aware it doesn't represent the best value, and if I'd really wanted I could easily have built up a full suss with similar travel from ebay.
  • I think this is just a thread to make Supersonic feel smug

This has been over a longish period as the wheels, pedals and a few other bits where upgrades on the Cube. I’m currently contemplating a new wheel set (pro2/crests) but I don’t need them so probably won’t happen and will go 10s at the back when either the cassette or rear mech give up on me.
I’d say it was worth it, I love riding the Soul, much more so than my old Cube. More comfortable and confidence inspiring going down and no slower going up or across.
I think this is just a thread to make Supersonic feel smug
    Think you might be right!

pretty chuffed all told - thought it would come out over 2 grand.

It might be better to ask "What has your bike cost per mile?" On a cost-per-mile basis my Anthem is the second cheapest bike in the garage (after my old road bike). I'm sure that the family will come round to my way of thinking eventually.

  • far too much!

    roadie
    surly LHT frameset £400
    wheels ~£200
    drivetrain ~£200
    misc (post/stem/mudguards/rack/saddle) ~£200
levers & bars from previous bike
I'd guess about £1400 to put together from scratch TBH.

    full sus
    frame £300
    revelations £300
    pro 2 evo wheels £230
    stylo cranks £120
    xt shifters/mechs/cassette bits ~£200
    finishing kit ~£200

That's almost certaintly underestimating the amount gone on bits I tried (saddles or bars or stems etc) and didn't like, plus the previous bikes (scott reflex £550 and lemond reno £750) which were partly been sold on ( frames only) as all the "consumables" all drive train components had been consumed (mashed the reno's wheels in a cattle trap, all the cassettes/chains/chainrings died, as did the reflexs shifters, wheels, etc) or reused (renos shifters, bars).

I do still have one part of my old MTB left in use - the spokes.

Carbon 456 build, taking bits off the old GT ID5 and adding upgrades.

Frame - £400 (couldn't wait any longer for the price drop. Still cheap anyway).
    Smoothie Mixer - £40
    X0 brakes - £200
    X9 10 speed rear mech - £55
    X9 10 speed shifter - £50
    SRAM PG 1050 cassette - £43
    KMC X10.93 chain - £18
FSA DH Chain Ring (for 1x10 set up) - £15
    Gear cable inner / outer - £9
    Jump Stop - £10
Easton EC70 MonkeyLite carbon bars - £50 (thanks to CRC discounts)
    Superstar grips - £10
DMV Vault pedals (bling!) - £80

    Swapped from the GT...
    Recon 327 SA forks
Alex Rim DP20 wheels with Formula hubs
    Truvativ Firex cranks

Swaps from GT that were previous upgrades...
Maxxis Minion DHF and High Roller tyres
    Hope seat clamp
    Hope QRs
    Raceface Atlas AM Stem
    Raceface bash (and bolts)
    Easton Havoc seatpost
    Charge Spoon seat

    Total build price: £980

Actual RRP of all this I work out at £2100 !

Not that anyone pays RRP, even a bike manufacturer would not be paying or selling a complete bike at RRP of all the parts.

Could say over the years I've basically spent £1700ish to get all that.
