Garmin 500 & Powetap

OK I finally got a Garmin 500 from Evans on a price match on Halfords pricing which should be arriving today. I'll be using with my Powertap therefore are there any particular setup steps I should be aware. I set my brothers Garmin 500 up a few weeks ago so I'm familiar enough with the basics of setting it up.
From reading around I can see that auto pause should be turned off as this causes problems with NP & TSS calculations. I also note that I have to do a reset between the ride into work and the ride back home again or else I'll end up with one enormous ride.
Not specifically powertap/500 related but I've also read that courses don't work very well. They seem to freeze the unit. Is this still an issue and are there any ways of transferring courses that seem to work better than others?
