(good) steak in London

So, having not taken enough holiday yet, I'm having a long weekend off in London with the gf :)

As such, I'd like to crown the occasion by going out for a nice meal.

Recently, I've really got into my beef & steak. Was always keen, but never fussed if I didn't have any, but now I regularly crave it.

Anywhere people can recommend?

SW would be ideal..

Preferably not too pricey!!

Oh, and the GF is not a fan of 'l'entrecote, unfortunately.

I can whole-heartedly recommend my gf's steak, especially with the blue cheese sauce.

You can't have any though, its all mine!

I really enjoyed Maze Grill, although it's a while since I've been.

I've also heard VERY good things about Cut, but haven't had chance to go yet:

Gaucho can be very mixed - I've had good and average, and for the money there's better out there. Also, you need to like eating in the dark.

    Does sound good.

To bring this back to cycling, does Argentina have a clenbuterol problem?

While we're at it, I'll confess, I like to think of myself as a foodie but my knowledge of steaks are limited - so which cut do you guys prefer?

I find fillet a lil - bland unless raw, and that's not really what you want a big meal of.

Is that the place where they were very close to winning that Gordon Ramsey F Word thing a couple of years back? If so they looked fantastic, but I remember reading some iffy revues of them afterwards. Good to hear they are worth a go.

Assuming it doesn't make the meat sh!t, i doubt it'd be a 'problem' at my level. If anything an advantage!

Nothing this side of the Atlantic comes close to an Argentinian steak unfortunately, clen or no clen. I have never enjoyed so much red meat in all my life.

Yup, was about to say the same about Ramsey, have them down on a list of places to visit after that show.

I like fillet when extremely rare, but yes, it can be bland

Best steak I ever had, Wagyu highly marbled rib eye in Dubai. Flavourful, amazing texture, but eye wateringly expensive.

    Step one
Go to Makro and spend £23 on an Argentinian ribeye joint.

    Step two
Slice it into ten inch-thick steaks

    Step three
    Get thee to the kitchen!

The steaks freeze well too. In fact I am going to the freezer right now!

This is meant to be very good and not too dear. I used to live near a place ran by the same crowd which was very good: http://garufa.co.uk/

I think Gaucho is pretty disappointing - its like a meaty Pizza Express.

In terms of steak - as a waiter at the wonderful Gibsons told me: Rib-eye or New York, its where its AT.

    http://www.gibsonssteakhouse.com/

I always order Rib-eye, medium rare - truffle chips and creamed spinach.

    Californian Petit Syrah.

    Gravadlax to start.

    BOOM.

I've been a few times to the one in Spitalfields. Its great. Extremely good steak, not at all cheap but you know you're getting the second best steak in London. My only problem with it... is, well, the trendy staff - all dreadlocks and stuff. I know it may sound a bit poncey but when I'm paying nearly a ton a head on dinner I like to see my dinner served by a waiter in a bow-tie.

Also, I had terrible service at the one in Covent Garden which was very disappointing as I'm a massive fan of the grub.

depends on the beast in hand

I'll assume beef, fillet or t-bone for me... although rib of beef is amazing as well. All 'cooked' rare as the chef will do

Hmm why? doesn't make the food taste different, if the same waiting staff came to your table once in relaxed restaurant uniform and once in bow tie how is that different?

you'd not like Noma, fat duck, St Johns etc

Just personal taste - I think when you're paying top dollar you're not just paying for the food, you're paying for the whole experience and I like my waiters dressed smartly. Saying that, I have patronised Hawksmoor with my custom about 10 times so it obviously doesn't bother me that much.

And they are smart in St.Johns - in a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest kind of way.

And they're not exactly scruffy at Fat Duck - even the Hinds Head staff wear shirt and trousers.

For good, old-school service (waiters with ties, etc) and excellent chateaubriand, Bleeding Heart was superb.

Gaucho for me is overrated and over prices and very in consistent.

The Guinea Grill in Mayfair does a very good steak. decent aberdeen angus stuff.

my cut of choice is good old rump. - might not be a tender as fillet but it has much more flavour.
