100 miles in Wales, advice please

Hi, A couple of years ago whilst doing a charity ride I developed ITB syndrome which has put me off cycling any real distance as this would start to hamper me, after say 50ish miles.
I miss riding my bike very much so have registered myself in a 100 mile charity event in August that runs through the night, although this event sends me into Wales it is missing out most of the big hills.
This said & done, it's still a worry for me as I really want this to be the one that puts me back into cycling again & I want to enjoy it.
So what I'm looking for is some advice on training for this event. Can I successfully build up the muscles around my IT band in time, and if so, what exercise is the best for this?

P.S I have access to a rowing machine.

Cheers, Mick

Heaps in this forum, try the Search function. Also:

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sportive+training+plan

P.S. a rowing machine isn't really going to help a great deal - riding your bike would be more use.

  • Good links! thanks Simon.
  • Don't train as such just enjoy riding.
Years ago I did audax rides and loaded touring etc and never "trained" just went on enjoyable rides of varying terrain and varying distance with friends, no heart monitors and always a decent cake stop.
  • Cheers sssstelvio, I love the training it makes the build up more exiting plus I need to build the muscle around my IT band, bloody painful when that kicks it I can tell you.
No heart monitors though promise & Im working on the cake stop.

Thats what I thought, It's the Cambrian Century Midnight Ride to Barmouth.

Correct I think it does run the Newport flats....Dru's made it sound so much more challanging

Forgot to add that there are loads of sites that discuss IT band issues as it's very common. A local sports therapist has a good PDF of stretches - first link on the downloads page. Here's a Youtube video of this guy who works his IT band with worktop stretches in his kitchen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlYM3KWwrGY

The night ride to Barmouth (this one?) won't be going anywhere near Newport or the Gwent Levels.

Wales = hills. If they ironed all the mountains out of our beautiful country it would be bigger the England.

I'm racking my brains to a flatish route but hilly routes are the norm here I'm afraid

Newport/Newtown ah well one or the other anyway......top man with the links, this is just what Im after.
Use utube for most things life throws at me (can follow written instructions) but I never thought of it for this.

I lived & went to school in Baschurch Simon, thought you would be up for this one being a Shropshire lad.

I'm originally from over the border, so not really 'local'. Have lived in Shrewsbury for 11 years now, rode through Baschurch this morning :)

The route of the Cambrian isn't too challenging (though jolly hard work if there's a stiff westerly). I've looked at it each year it has been run but never had the nerve to commit to doing it.
