Sorry for starting a thread on this as its probably been asked a before, but 2012 has suddenly give me lower back ache after about 20 miles on the bike. Starts as a slight pain in my right @ss cheek, then lower back just aches. My missus mum told me last night it may be the sciatic nerve inflamed so just wondering if you clever people have some good quick solutions to get this sorted quickly.
Cheers!

I have a similar issue. It is possible that it is your piriformis muscle which may or not involve your sciatic nerve.it's also called wallet pocket syndrome because that's where it affects you most. If you google the term you will find a few stretches which will help you Strengthen the muscle. I've taken a few days off the bike and am working on the stretches and it seems to be making a positive impression so far
I hope that helps0 -
Go see a sports therapist.
It is possibly a tight muscle impinging the nerve. If diagnosed (which the therapist will do) Some deep tissue work will likely free it up. The likely culprits are piriformis, hamstring, glute or even the back muscles.
~Or the cheaper version is to sit on the floor, place a tennis ball under the offending butock and roll around on it. If somewhere hurts then hold that position for a bit then carry on rolling. Sometimes a tennis ball isn't hard enough so a hard rubber ball or cricket ball will do the trick. Watch you don't lose the ball whilst rolling about!!Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals! Except the weasel0 -
+1 for potential for piriformis muscle, which I get every now and again and often after a period off regular exercise. Can usually manage it with focused stretching. I like the stretch where you sit down on the floor with straight back and legs straight out, put left foot over right leg at the knee then pull the left knee of your crossed leg up towards your chest (if that makes any sense !).
Dont get the back ache as much though, so maybe worth checking this out with your local physio.
Whenether I have had a little break over Xmas or not, getting back on the bike often results in me getting a pain in the ar*e0 -
