WRT the second part of the OP, IIRC when Australia had a referendum on becoming a Republic it failed big style. The general conclusion was that Oz voters did not fancy any of their crop of politicians being given a huge trough to get their snouts into. Hence they decided that Brenda would do, as she did no harm and cost very little. The older I get the faster I was0

Cavendish isn't English.
OT - How would that race happen? Cavendish isn't going to stand a chance in sprint against Hoy, but Hoy would be never be in the field after 150miles (unless pancake flat)“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -

She is Elizabeth I of Scotland - you've had two Marys and an Anne so far. As TWH says, Cavendish is Manx.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

As the IOM isn't in the United Kingdom or Great Britain (according to Wikipedia), how comes Cav can represent Team GB in the olympics and other events?

There's more to oil than the North Sea, West of Shetland for starters.
Also, there's more to Scotland than oil.
Shortbread for starters
Anyway, what does England have apart from the financial base (the evil bankers ) that is London?
Just to stir things up a little :twisted:None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I hope the Scottish government will be better at running Scotland than building tram systems.0

What are Scotland's main industries? Whiskey and golf come to mind.
Please tell me it's not banking!0 -

On the other hand, the SNP were the only party to vote against it so there may be hope for the future.
Industries? Fairly similar to England, just smaller numbers.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I love Scotland, I only first visited last April and returned again in Oct we loved it so much, if Scotland want independence then so be it. I am sure they will be able to stand on there own two feet, just scares me when people use Norway as an example due to them still paying Billions a year to the EUSSR for access into the free market and still having to abide by 80-90% of EU laws yet don't get any of the few benefits of been a member.
If Scotland have low business tax rates like Ireland then I am sure businesses will use Scotland as a base, that said Salmond is a pretty clever fella.0 -

I can see both sides and Sky liking the idea. No one else.

Think it might be stretching things to say Edinburgh is one of the top banking centres if it is behind even Madrid, but some interesting stats here.
ETA: and in Table 1 World GFCI rankings, Edinburgh is 29th.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)
