HI guys,
could someone please explain how/if i can fit a through axle to my 2010 blue pig frame?
i am buying a wheel set but im unsure what axle to fit or if i can even use a through alxle, ive only ever used 9mm QR so unsure about this
the wheel set i have in mind is from superstar and is stans flow with switch evo hubs http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=496
can i run 10mm axle or 12mm? i want the bike as tough as i can make it, im not the smoothest yet and plan to tackle tougher stuff so want the bike to be able to withstand my poor treatment
if you could advise on frame / rear axle compatability i would be very grateful
cheers
scott

What dropouts does the frame have? Rear QRs are 10mm anyway.0

i converted my hope pro 2 hub on my 2008 pace rc305 hardtail from a 9mm Qr to a 10mm boltthrough. those wheels are now on my chromag stylus
it was easy to do and i had no issues at all with compatability.. same when we converted the pro 2 on ourkids knolly dt..
i got a new rear wheel built up for my heckler a fire eye hub that was 10mm through axle fitted with no issues.
made the back stiffer a lot stiffer...
i have the superstar 10mm through axel on my f/s and hard tail...www.bearbackbiking.com

i think they are standard QR drop outs, so i could bang in a 10mm through axle if thats the case?delcol wrote:i converted my hope pro 2 hub on my 2008 pace rc305 hardtail from a 9mm Qr to a 10mm boltthrough. those wheels are now on my chromag stylus

looks like thats the way forward, have you ever had any issues with it or has it all been good news?
*edit* i better get the internal calipers and check out the size0 -

hecklers rear wheel was changed in 08 for the fire eye 10mm boltthrough. never had any issues with, same wheel now on butcher no issues with it since bike was built.
pace/chromag. converted the pace around march last year had no issues with either frame.
same with the knolly converted april last year no issues at all...www.bearbackbiking.com

Am I missing something here, a standard qr frame can take a bolt through axle? for example my giant reign?0
-
you not confusing bolt through axel with through axle are you. ?
see here a video i did when i convereted mine to give you an idea of how easy it is to do and what type of axle it is..
but yes your reign would take a 10mm through axle.

First up the front is 9mm and the rear is 10mm. If your frame takes a rear scewer you can usually convert to a 10mm bolt through if your wheel has the provision to change the axel and or end caps eg Hope Pro 2. Basically you are replacing the skinny little scewer with a 10mm threaded bar or Superstar do a 10mm QR if you want to retain a quick release.
The Pro 2 hub needs a new axel and end caps. The Pro 2 Evo only needs the end caps as the axel is already the correct size to take the 10mm bolt through or 10mm QR. Then decide if you want QR or bolt.

Check with Superstar to see what they do for your wheels.0 -
Intresting, and does it make a noticable difference to stiffness?0
-
first did this on my heckler back in 08 with a fire eye hub (new wheel build) 10mm bolt through. the hckler had a very flexy back end you could feel it bending under hard cornering and when riding across cambered trails.
the bolt through 10mm axle eliminated this.
it made a noticable difference to my pace rc 305 to the backend is way stiffer. notice it when cornering especially berms......
so to answer your question yes it does.www.bearbackbiking.com

awesome, this is defonately the way forward for me0
-
Parts will be ordered and conversion done, reign back end is flexy so hopefully a win situation. Thanks for postng supafly19820

It worked for me. I have an Orange 5 which is well known for a creaky rear end. Fitted the 10mm axel and 10mm QR and it is creak free and noticably stiffer.0
-
But on a steel ht? Bet you can't tell any difference.0
-
would'nt know the answer to that grand master ss.
the conversion was done last year when the wheels were on my pace, when i built up the chromag in october i just transfared everything from the pace over to the chromag frame. apart from the head set (44mm tapered) and seat post...
so i never rode the chromag with a standard qr...www.bearbackbiking.com

supersonic wrote:But on a steel ht? Bet you can't tell any difference.
what makes you say that?0 -
Burly steel frames have stiff steel pipes. 10mm hollow qr cromo axles are stiff anyway - they don't move about in the dropouts!0
-
aye as opposed to the old springy steel frames, was that what you meant?0
-
Yeah, but even then, you could put a girder between the the droputs and weld it in, some directions of flex will not change.0
-
i see what your saying, well i suppose it will do no harm and it wont cost anything extra so im going to go with the 10mm bolt through QR option0
