First time on rollers :D done 25 miles and it did not seem boring, like with the
turbo i used to have.
What i did find is that its very road like, just need to concentrate a lot more.
Anyone else on rollers?and how do you get on with them.

Absolutely no way... I'd be permanently bricking it that I'm gonna fall off and smash myself up. Good job for 25 miles though... I'd be fully grey by the time I finished that distance on rollers.

    Yep, traditional rollers are great.

It's not hard once you get your confidence, I'm no expert but I've managed to stand, ride with no hands (sitting), ride with one leg pedaling. I'm now practicing one legged-no handed, and I'm finding it's not as easy to keep the front wheel in line.

All pretty pointless but fun to practice and makes regular roller riding seem easy.

What i do, i have a sort of step next to the bike/rollers,
and then have a step ladder to hold on to until i get going :D
All in the garage of course.
Once up and running its ok,the more i use them the better it will get.
Even managed to stand for a little but got wobbly.
Much better than my turbo i had, which was a cyclops jet fluid pro trainer which was not cheap.

    My rollers tacx antares.

Mileage is pretty meaningless, it's hourage that counts. Two hours on rollers just flies by when you're watching a film. I could probably manage four, but my perineum couldn't. Without televised distraction, I have serious difficulty riding rollers for more than fifteen seconds.

  • I prefer rollers over turbos. Still a novice at it but keeping my balance pretty well. Not yet managed "the tricks" yet but that may come. Biggest problem at the minute is pins and needles in my hands. Find I have to use my gloves as that seems to make it easier. Never had this prob before so slightly perturbed at min.
  • It's not just me that gets pins and needles then :D To alleviate the issue I tend to get off for a minute every 20 minutes for 30 seconds or so. I can also stand up while on the rollers now, though it's still not easy and I find that doing that also helps.
  • Are rollers any more or less noisey than a turbo?

My rollers are more noisy than my turbo if used on wooden floorboards, and vice versa if used on a concrete floor. The answer depends entirely on the model of roller or turbo because they all vary in how much noise they make.

Also, if you have plastic rollers, make sure you put them next to something metal (e.g. a door handle) and touch it with your hand every once in a while.

Seems like there's a gang of us then  just wish I knew it was occurring, I keep shifting hand position regularly including shaking them out but doesn't make a great deal of difference it seems. Gloves help but not totally. Hey ho have to learn to ride without using my hands I guess!

I have started to stand to now,but a little at a time.
In a few weeks time it should be much better.

  • Rollers are great, really hard work as you are constantly pedalling, try intervals and spinning on them which is a lot less boring than constant riding.
