Hi,

I have bought a cycleops turbo trainer and I am looking to buy a spare wheel to save me having to change the tyre out each time want to train or ride on the road. Can anyone please tell me the cheapest possible way to do this (ie cost of a cassette/suitable wheel). I have a specialized vita sport which has 700 x 28 wheels currently. I already have a spare tyre and tube so really just need to know what cassette/wheel I need (cheapest if possible)

Regards

Emma

any wheel the same size will be fine - new or second hand from ebay/classifieds etc. Just make sure it has the right freehub for your needs. Buying a turbo trainer specific tyre will last longer than a normal road tyre but not essential.

By the time you buy cheap wheel & cassette you are looking at £100 to £150 which is the same at 4/5 decent tyres. Much less hassle to just use the same tyre for both and change when worn out

I bought a rear wheel cheap as chips from decathlon £35... I fitted it with an old tyre and picked up a cheap 10spd cassette. All in all about £50.

Saves me wrecking a set of good tyres and means i/you can keep your turbo scewer in that wheel all the time.

I chose the option you are pondering over. I would say it's worth it if you have just the one (main) bike, also get a power link (pliers) and new chain. In the long term it will save you effort and less wear on your components.

Go to your LBS and ask for an old wheel - keep asking around -as most will have some junk in the back.

Keep the same cassette - best way is to treat your bike to a new one and put the used one on the turbo wheel.

If you do go this route - buy a turbo specific tyre as they are plastic and wont burn up the same way.

+1 I also got a 105 cassette when I was there. With club discount and vouchers it came to £60.

It allows me to swap the wheel between bikes

Really? I swap between my Synapse and QR and have no issues. Synapse has a 6600 12-27, QR has a PG1070 11-23 and the turbo wheel in a 5700 12-25. I have issues on indexing at all.

Never had much of a problem with turbos ruining tyres. Just always used the same tyre (Pro Race 3). Sure, its a bit squared off by the time spring comes round, but then it just gets replaced.

    Not worth the hassle IMO

    ebay!

I am the same, the conti tyre is a pig and easier just to change the wheel. I paid peanuts for mine and its worth it. Only hassle is its not quite the same as normal wheel so often need to trim.

The only suitable rear wheel Decathlon sell cheap is a Btwin, which is £35 and says: "Compatible with Shimano or 7/8/9 speed Sram cassette"

How did you get the 10 speed one to fit? I looked at one and discounted it on this!?

I have the same wheel and it fitted a 5700 casette fine. I sometimes find the website isn't always accurate.

    I'll take a pic tonight.

  • Thank you for the replies guys. I bought a spare wheel and cassette yesterday for £42. I think I got quite a bargain as I reserved a wheel and cassette for £46 (found a 10% online code) and when I went to collect the guy told me I had ordered the wrong wheel. He could only find a £45 one and matched the price of the £30 one as I was cheeky to ask for a discount as it was scratched! He gave me an extra 10% off on top (I am never this lucky normally!)

Off now to buy some rim tape as I am a true novice and it took me repairing two punctures before I realised the problem!! Will try out the trainer later but appreciate the guidance x

I bought a rear wheel with the correct cassette on it from the classified section on this site, it cost me £30.00. I put a turbo tyre on it and I was good to go.
I just change the rear wheel to suit turbo or road.
