edited December 2011 in MTB buying advice
Currently riding a hugely upgraded GT Avalanche 2.0 that I bought off these forums a few weeks ago, but my unfit 37 year old body's crying out for a little more shock absorption!

Riding's mostly trail/cross country with some rough downhill on our usual route around Slaley forest, and we ride Kielder too, with plans for Hamsterley and the 7 Stanes next year.

Mate's just bought a 2011 Lapierre Zesty 214, so something along those lines would be good, although I'd prefer something with a rear shock lockout of some kind as his feels a little 'bouncy' going uphill, and relatively light if that's possible.

Quite happy to take the second hand route if it'll get me something considerably better. Thanks in advance. :D

Pauls Cycles usually have some bargains....so what I suggest is take a look on their site...if any take your fancy nip to your local bike stores to try the brand and model for size, if you like it then order from Pauls...great service too...

    Some ideas

But looking at the spec of X4 vs X5, I think the X4's worth the extra.

Anyone comment on Anthem vs Trance, they look very similar to my untrained eye, much difference?

TBH for the extra 250 golden nuggets I'd go for the X4 instead of the X5 if you could push to it, float rear / F 100 front, deore/SLX instead of alivio, so no doubt overall a fair bit lighter I should imagine.

However the spec on the X5 isn't crap either, it'll do the job.

In terms of trance vs anthem, the trance is a little bit more burlier and heavier, not to say it wont be nimble but has more travel. The anthem is more racier orientated geometry and lighter but again thats not to say you cant throw it round a trail centre or natural trail with its 100mm

    Thanks for the info.

I won't be buying until after Christmas, hopefully there's an extra few quid off by then too, the X4 for a grand sounds spot on, will nip to one of my LBS next week, as they're Giant specialists.

On a slight side note, any Scott bikes that could be suitable? Friend of a friend's a rep for them, and has said he might be able to get me a discount.

I would go second hand mate.

Think about it, you could get a bike that cost £2000 upwards a year go for about £1000, probably less, and it will be far superior.

    Specialized P3 Frame

"Anyone comment on Anthem vs Trance, they look very similar to my untrained eye, much difference?"

I have an Anthem X4 2011, love the bike to bits, lots of nice gear on it and paid only £1143 in September.
Spec is a lot better than the Trance X4 but it is a different kind of bike, Anthem is less travel front and rear and the angles of frame and fork are different, as said earlier Anthem is great for xc trail.
I use mine for XC around my local "wilderness" but I also us it at Bedgebury Trail centre red and black routes.
My brother has a Zesty 216 and as that has 140mm travel feels like an armchaior compared to my Anthem but it does me fine and looks fantastic...... :D

Assume you mean something like this one - http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/speciali ... 61731.html

Looks decent, any idea how it compares to either Giant?

Thanks for the info. Think I'd like something that can soak up the bumps like my mate's Zesty, but with less 'bob' on the uphills!

The reviews of the shocks (or very similar models anyway) on here don't sound too promising :-

Been looking some more, and really like the look of the Canyon Nerve XC 6.0 - http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes ... tml?b=2555

Gonna post in the Canyon thread too, but just wondering if anyone knows how it would compare to the Anthem or Trance? Thanks.

Very very nice and you will be hard pushed to find a bike with a better spec than that for that money....

Thank you, it does look like excellent value, could be 'the one', lol, just a shame I can't take one for a spin first. :)

When MBR reviewed the Canyon Nerve XC they loved it. If I had the money I know where it would be going! I'd be of CANYON racing. :D

It does seem to get excellent reviews, off to check the finances and see if I can afford a 7.0 or 8.0 instead...
