CX tyres on a road bike ?

Got up to ride this morning and was way too much ice so I went out later, about 3pm thinking would be better.
I ride on quiet country lanes as the advantage is very low traffic volume but the downside is the roads are often shaded and slippery either from ice, frost or leaves and mud.
I had several hairy moments downhill when backend slid out.
This is nothing to do with road tyres as I have treid a few, it is down to road and weather conditions.
I am thinking of putting some cyclocross tyres on winter bike to make it safer, has anyone on here tried this, if so what tyres?
I will post in amature race also.

Cx tyres are crap on road and less grippy. Put them on if you're riding trails but less rubber in contact with the road means less grip.
Studded tyres would be good for ice though - check you have the clearance first.

As above.....squirmy as he'll on Tarmac IME so wouldn't dam of using them in ice etc. I don t think there is a solution apart from something like studs that cut through the ice, same as car tyres. The nobles just help clear loose stuff like mud and sushi etc but are not good on slippery solid surfaces.

You get a lot of sushi on your tyres?

Yes, and also a team of nobles to clean the mud and sushi off. They have a bit of trouble standing up on slippery surfaces though. :)

thats the last time I try and use my iPhone on here then!

Clearly I do have a lot of nobles round here to ride on and do like a bit of sushi, but do my best not to ride through it before I eat it!

    F^&%ing iPhone ;)

WIll not give them a try then :D
Went out on sunday, very cold and icy, few skids again but no off, stayed in straight line as much as possible.
I wonder iftyr manufacturers looked at "winter" tyres for bikes like they do for winter road tyres.

The only tyres for ice are studded tyres.

    Something like these - http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/produ ... piked_Tyre

winter tyres (car) are just soft compound.

race tyres have about the softest compounds, clearly with a eye to MTB's you could use softer compounds on say tougher training tyre carcass.

Not sure it would make that much difference TBH.
