Simple question.

What keeps your legs warm in the winter?

I've just bought a couple of pairs of shorts, so pants are not an option.

Manning TFU and some northern blood. That's sufficient.

That's what I've been doing so far, but there was actually snow on the ground today and the old knees get a bit chilly...

I tell you what's worse though. Feet. My toes get freezing.

3/4 or full length bibs under baggy shorts. There's no point wrecking your knees because you think you'retoo tough to keep yourself warm

  • Mavic Legwarmers are excellent and around £25, but get a size smaller as my legs are definately large and I bought Medium as for some reason these come up way big which is strange as Mavic clothing is normally a very close fit but they are great.

Use bottle-holder holes to attach a patio heater to the frame. Run it from a dynamo.

    Next problem?
  • I bought some Leg Warmers from Decathlon a couple of weeks ago, for £15 they do what they are designed todo however if you get up out of the seat or move around alot they do slide down your legs after about 40minutes of riding

Leg warmers are the cheapest option, but a little bit roadie.....

They re useful all through the year as well, as you can just pull them down round your ankles if you get too warm in spring/autumn!

  • Are there any less Gay suggestions? How about knee pads. They'll help me look gnarly and keep my legs warm, surely? Or will they just get on my boobs?

Or should I just shed my inhibitions and buy all of this hormonal roadie style gear?

Knee pads is what I use. Not for winter, I just wear them all the time out of habit really. Together with knee length baggies.

Don't really notice the shins getting cold and no need to wear girly roadie stuff. Maybe tracky bottoms in snow though.

Thought the pads might get in the way but got used to them and rarely notice now. A little sweaty on a long climb on a very hot day. 661 Kyle Straight.

I'd rather wear tights than not on a really cold day.

As for keeping your feet warm, ditch the disco slippers if that's what you use and get either some Five Tens or some Shimano AM45's. They'll keep your feet toasty.

  • Full Length Fleece lined Bibs...

I also ditch the Greg Minaar 5.10's for some normal SPD shoes with fleece lined over shoes.. looks a bit tosh,, but it's dark usually, so who cares?

I ve had 2 sets of winter boots now and they ve both been rubbish (for the money). Get a cheap or a different* sort of summer shoes and some sealskin socks. 2 pairs of shoes for the same/less money and just as effective IME

*like if you have a set of pimpy racing shoes, get some All mountain ones you can walk in for example

  • Id just use some old jeans..none of that tight lark. If I had the doe though I would invest in a pair of endura full length pants or something similar.

I've done the opposite, gotten some Five Ten Hellcats for winter instead of the disco slippers as hopefully they'll keep my feet warm regardless of how wet they get. That was what happened when I used my Freeriders for winter XC anyway.

  • This is a coincidence, I was just about to post this question again, and my last years topic is on the front page...

As it happens I ended up wearing my shorts all winter last year. But whilst I'm obviously hard as nails, I can't help but feel it's less than an ideal solution.

Strangely, as with last year approaching the winter, I've just bought some summer leg wear (in the form of bib shorts). I guess I figured they'd make better all rounders ... I don't like buying things per season, I'm skint enough as it is.

Something that would keep me warm on long winter days out in the northern hills would be good though. Hypothermia and resulting death are not on my list of priorities.

This. Pads and 3/4 baggie shorts are plenty for me - soon warm up when riding.
