Right,

Ive just bought myself some of these very popular guards and following a very dodgy trip home from the bike shop with the box between my teeth, its time to get them set up....Having just pulled a heap of plastic and fixings from the box...I have a feeling this will take a while.

I make it exactly 2pm.... Bets as to when i finish?

4pm if you are running 23mm tyres, midnight and still not sorted if 25s

  • Took me a week to fit my SMK chromoplastics (i had to buy bolt croppers and everything!) and they still shake around and rub now and again.

Thats just lulling you into a false sense of security.....

And you've been out on the bike and found that there are no rattles, rubs etc - the brushes aren't aligned with the tyres rather than the rims? Did you put the frame protection tape over the contact points to avoid the paint abrasion you'll otherwise get?

    Then, and only then........

Did you get the new version with the sticky bits where the blades join? Makes them more secure.

I got mine fitted in about 30mins. They're great, no probs with them at all.

When I refitted mine it was very quick - but initially it took an evening. But I have zero clearance on the nose piece and eventually built up an araldite blob ahead of the screw hole to lift the nose a bit. But it is still a bit too close. If you have plenty of clearance, it should be a doddle.

But they are an inspired piece of design.

i broke my rear one tipping the bike up on its back wheel to get past my car on the drive :( gutted as they worked pretty well, i will still put them back on when it gets rubbish weather although i hate the look of them so am looking for a winter bike for next year probably a crosser

  • Gave up on trying to fit mine when running 25s, but didn't take long to fit once I changed to 23s. Front tailpiece pinged off somewhere mid ride when I must have caught it with my foot but otherwise really impressed. They make a huge difference to riding in the wet. Chapeau mr crud.

Don't they come supplied with numerous spair tail pieces as standard in case of this happening? i'm sure i read that was the case.

Not quite. You get two tails for the rear but those are different length options. For the front you get a spare nose piece because that part used to be used as a nose for the Mark 1 rear. You don't get a front tail spare.

My front tail disappeared as well - odd really as the piece it was attached to didn't break as you'd think. I got a set of replacement nose and tails with the glue patches.

Hmmm I'm running 35mm tyres on my cross bike. I guess I've no chance with a crudcatcher then ?

Even if it wasn't the tyres, I presume you have some sort of canti brake setup which would stop the Cruds working - they cable tie to the caliper bolts.

I have just installed a set, having bought them 2nd hand, in under 45 minutes without any instructions. Both wheels are spinning very freely, and the overall look of the bike hasn't been spoilt too much, in my opinion.

Looking forward to going out tomorrow for a ride, and dare I say it, am secretly hoping that it is a little bit wet in order to guage how well they perform.

I think the clearance would be ok for the cantis - but yes its something to look into. And i think zipties may work. Have to look at that too. Cheers.

I have the Mk1's on a Boardman Road Team (alu) with 24mm conti Grand Prix's. As this now the winter bike I wanted to move up to 25mm gatorskins or some such - anyone tried this combination with the Crudcatchers? Given some of the posting re: 25mm tyres it sounds like a no no...

I put mine on in early Sep, and took some time. The I took them off for a triathlon. Back on now - very quickly and better fitted.

Unfotunately the bike has been in the back of the car all week and the rear guard now has a left twist :(

I wouldn't assume so yet - depends on the clearance between the underside of the caliper and the tyre. I know some bikes can fit Cruds with 25mm tyres and I know it is going to be impossible for me to fit Schwalbe 25s to my Ribble with the guards on. Luck of the draw!

The other week I managed to smash the front mudguard with my foot, really fed up as I thought I might have to get a complete set to replace. Got home and just out of interest googled crudcatcher spares, bingo, spare parts most items if not all £6.50 inc. delivery, brilliant.

They are not called Crudcatchers, folks - they are Crud Roadracers!

I'm not being pedantic - if you ask for Crudcatchers for your Christmas present you will get these ...

Whereas if you ask for Crud Roadracers (which I use and am a fan of - see my signature link for a review), you will get these ...

Fitted some last week myself. Front was no problem, but clearance on the rear is about 1mm. Haven't had chance to test them yet to see what they are like bouncing over potholes etc :/

I tried them last winter. A sod to align with 24mm Tyres on my PX Frame.

Even when i did manage to get it all perfect a short ride over some Herts/Beds pot hole ridden roads undid all the hard work.

They were promptly binned in Spring.

Those tyres are far too wide to fit into Crud Roadracers. Most cross bikes have plenty of room for normal mudguards which are better than Cruds. Cruds are designed for bikes with insufficient clearance for anything else.

You could have at least donated them to someone who isn't terminally impatient. Besides, you should calm down a bit - you're clearly going to have a heart attack

PS - let this be a lesson to others to do the nuts up properly!

Went for a short and muddy ride this morning, running CrudRacers mk1 on my Boardman Team and Conti 24mm tyres. Had to stop 3 times to find a stick and scrape out the mud that got trapped between the tiny clearance between the tyre and the inside of the guard (front and rear). My bike computer has also been sent back under warranty so with nothing to tell me how fast (or how slow) I was riding, together with constant scraping noise dragging against the tyres it felt like a long hard slog!!! No way 25mm tyres will fit so i reckon I'm gonna go back to race blades, not ideal but got to be better than this mornings ride...
