Is a white bike a stupid idea?

Hello,

Tarty question:

I'm thinking of buying a white Whyte. Will I regret this? Is it going to turn brown and stay that way the first time i ride it? Is it going to mark more easily and show up scratches? Is it going to show cable rub more easily? Anyone have a white bike or even better a white Whyte? How's it holding up?

I know it's a bike, should be riding it not looking at it etc etc but I still want to know.

Thanks

Do white cars go brown ??? no....they have similar paint systems to bikes....

The best way to protect the frame is using helitape which is like thick sellotape which you apply to the frame to protect against chips and scratches. You can also buy these type of protectors that you put over cables where you have contact with the frame http://www.xtremecycles.co.uk/index.php ... cts_id=795

It's upto you to keep it clean, I use Fenwicks / Muc Off bike cleaner to keep it in tip top condition...

As for white bikes...I am on my 4th and think they look cool....here is mine

  • White also hides scratches better than darker bikes.

What forks are these on the bike - most I've seen have the cross bar in front of the pistons?

Lol. I have a Black Whyte. It doesnt get dirty because everyone knows dirt doesnt stick to the colour black but black isnt as fast as white. However i do have sleepless nights dreaming about snow.

I think its out of balance....not enough white to be honest....I would change the forks and saddle for starters...just don't go riding in the snow and stop for a pi$$ :-)

I like how white bike kit looks once it's mangled and dirty... Never really clean my bikes, can't see the point but they do look nicely used.

Quite amazingly lazy in fact. But, I still reckon it's true. I've got a hammer in the garage that my grandad nicked from the RAF in 1945, it's absolutely black with age... I could polish it up but that'd just ruin it. Same with bikes, scratches and scrapes and dirt are marks of proud service.

  • White bikes are great I totally love mine :D

But... mine does have brown marks on one side of the top tube. It's got a section of fine scratches which seem to have become ingrained with dirt and wont clean up (not that I've tried that hard). Not even sure how or when it happened and it doesn't bother me - it probably would have bothered me if it had happened when it was new, but it's 3 now and if it didn't have scars it would be a waste 8)
