Can we start a thread here for this winter's cyclocross season? There doesn't seem to be anywhere else on the site to talk about it, and it's really piqued my interest.

What are the big races, and where can one watch them on the internets?

If you ask about Great Britain then go to the British Cycling site. (BCF)

And also note that this year's World Champs are in Koksijde, which isn't very far away at all. I'm gonna go for the weekend!

  • Koksijde's the absolute heart of Belgian cycling country isn't it?

It appears there's a big race tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a chance to watch.

There's three big series of races to watch, all of which have 8 races:

    1. The UCI World Cup
    2. Superprestige
    3. GvA (Gazet van Antwerpen)

Tomorrow's race is a Superprestige race, at Zonhoven which, if memory serves, has a large sandy section.

As always, www.cyclingfans.com seems to have links to streams for most of the races.

Sorry I thought you wanted to be out there in the Cold and the Wind.

  • Well. I watched it today and was highly impressed, start to finish, although the best part was the advert for "Superprestige hits", an album of songs from the races.

The sheer number of people too, they pay a few quid to be there don't they?

There was some huge crowds at Zonhoven todays plus some great crashes! There's plenty of deep sand around here so it was particularly impressive watching the riders plough their way through the stuff and Albert simply ride off the front.
Koppenberg Cross on Tuesday is another big event.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Also good to see Nikki Harris get second in the women's event, even if alot of the big names weren't riding.
  • Why do this...

Went to watch the North East Cyclocross Series Event 7 in Durham City today, cracking stuff. Seemed really beginner friendly too - quite a few newbies taking part for the fun of it, with the serious contenders fighting it out at the front. Might have a bash myself!

From watching this video, it's "Dollargrabbing"

If you fast forward to 32 mins in, the riders grab the cash as they ride round.

Pauwels is winning everything, nobody appears to be able to make any challenge, as soon as he attacks the chasers start looking at each other.

  • In the video of the ditch, why do all the riders follow the same line each time? Is it so much easier than any other line? Also why do they ride so often in a line and not so often in small pack? Is it simply due to slipstreaming and difficulty round the tight corners?

It can be a bit like motor racing where they follow the racing line - best route for cornering, but also in motor racing if you go off the racing line you pick up dust, debris etc.... In cross if you go off the usual racing line the course can be bumpy, rutted and have more debris as it's not been smoothed out by the riders in front. On some courses the racing line becomes a bit tram line like, making it difficult actually get out onto another line.
  • Thanks.

    Pity Eurosport won't cover it....

This might be a silly question, and I think I know the answer - Why don't we (UK) have a World Cup round??......
