    Crest are 85kg, 717 are 90kg. 719 are 115kg.

Need to compare the XC717 to the Crest. These are both XC rims. The Crest is 340grams vs the XC717 at 395 grams. The Flow rims etc are another class and need to be compared to an all mounttain rim.

In regards to weight limit the stans page itself says nothing about a weight limit. http://www.notubes.com/ZTR-Rims-C18.aspx

A lightweight wheel with few spokes will be weak. The same rim with more holes will be stronger. This is why the Hope Pros XC3 with 24 spokes has a "suggested" max rider weight where as the 32 spoke version does not have this with the same rim.

Some rims are stonger than others. Some although weaker have more "spring" or "give" in them so although they appear weaker in say a mechancial test but they then absorb the shock better and rather than break, bend or crack they flex and move back into shape after the hit.

Matter of personal preference, how you ride and where you ride. If there was a rim/spoke/hub combination that was good for all of us and the riding we did I suspect we'd all be riding the same wheels.

uh oh, I say wrong  :?:

Where did you find the weights out of curiosity? All I see on the Stans website is
"We are often asked if we have a weight limit but it's more important to consider all of the components in the wheel as well as the intended use.". Searching for 85kg and crest just gets me the racy Hope Hoops.

Just found the Mavic ones in the service manuals, well hidden those!

Stans seem to have got rid of the little bit that said 85kg! Strange. But it used to be there!

Be good to see Mavic offer some of the Cross Max rims after market

The old (pre-UST) Crossmax rims were fairly easy to come by, and could be built with normal spokes, in 1999 one of those was £95 though (compared to an X517 Ceramic at £45), so I suspect you'd be talking silly silly money now, and even an SLR rim isn't that light in the context of other alu rims that are floating around.

Mavic rims tend to be deeper and narrower, Stans shallower and wider. Be good to see Mavic offer some of the Cross Max rims after market, or other alternatives. I think many 717 rims are sold aftermarket, and Mavic prefer the eyelets for home builders to use. Still choice would be nice ;-)

Either way, the Superstar/717 at 200, or Superstar/Crest at 220 are very good for the money.

For £250 the merlin Hope Pro11 Evo Wheel seems like a very good deal, and seems to get good reviews.

Compared to the superstar £220 you dont see many reviews of it which is a suprise given like you said Stans Rims are known for being very good though some claim they are not suited for heavy riders(insert what you may into this)

I think both of the above deals are good, though myself id be inclined to go for Stan Rim crest as they are light and still very strong, and im not that heavy...i think :P

  • Well this thread has helped me decide to definitely go for the stronger wheel. Just ordered a front Stans Flow on Pro2 hub... will see how I get on with it.

For the time being will be using a Mavic Crossmax ST rear, if I'm happy with the front, I'll buy a matching rear after xmas.

    Got it for £90 ;)
