  • Everyone likes a epilogue, right? And closure is a good thing. I suppose.

So, having completely bollocksed this thing up, I did what any obsessive idiot who doesn't know when he's beat does. I bought another one. So that doubled the price of the gift. Awesome.

But I wasn't going to get screwed this time. Nosiree. So I left this one in it's box, surrounded by packing peanuts, in the box it shipped in. Until tonight when it was time to wrap it. I thought I had better check this one was okay.

    It's broken too.

This break was nothing to do with me (really). I opened the box and packaging more carefully than Indiana Jones in an ancient temple. Someone had already done what I had done, and boxed it up again. Great.

So. Now 36 hours from the birthday, down the cost of two presents and up, well, nothing really.

I've been forbidden from trying to fix this one on the basis it's going back (I can see that being a fight), and my previous efforts were less than fully successful.

    Bollocks.

ETA: I found one in eBay. Broken in the same place.

I think there may be a design flaw.

    I am delighted to have a companion in misfortune . . . .

So this morning I arrive at work to see a flashing message sign on the "new" IP phones . .

I enter the nine digit and three squirrel noise string of key strokes to access the message . .

"Your PIN has expired, please enter a new PIN"

fecking hell - it's a fecking phone why in the name of all hell would I need a PIn that requires updating on a fecking desk phone... Livid. Now I only have one PIN as four digits about all I'm good for so i am royally pissed off that I'm going to have two, one of which is going to fecking well change every 30 days.

    FECKING HELL

    anyway . .

I enter the 16 key stroke code to get to the PIN number change sequence and type in

    1234

feck em - if it's going to change every month I need some system to help me along.

    "That PIN is invalid"

feck - they must have set a non sequential rule - feckers....

    Right then

    9876

    "That PIN is invalid"

Argh - forwards and backwards non sequential rule

    ARGHHH

    Then

    "Enter your ID number"

    What ID number? feckers

I put in my staff ID

    "Enter your PIN number"

My "old" pin number? one of teh two new ones you don't like? Put in the the old one . .

    "That PIN is invalid"

    FECKING HELL

So I phone the unhelpful desk.

I enter an easy to remember nineteen question / response rage invoking Automatic fool about robot string to get to a human....

    "What's the problem"

"My Phone is a complete fecking cockbadger and my PIN's up it's ars* and I'm not changing the bastard every tea time!!"

"OK Sir, you need a PIN reset"

"ARgggghhhhh I need a drink - fecker - go on then yeah reset my pricking PIN" by this time the veneer of civilisation is very thin . . .

    "Certainly Sir"

"I need to ask you a couple of security questions - what is your date of Birth"

"And what was the Date you joined the firm"

The date I joined the firm

    "Are you kidding me?"

    "No Sir"

"I don't know when I joined the firm - it was 5 years ago"

"Sorry Sir I cannot proceed until you answer the question"

"I can't answer teh question - I don't know the answer . . ask me another - one about sport maybe?"

"We don't have any others - can you call HR and get them to tell you and then call me back and i can proceed"

    "For my fecking voicemail?"

    "yes Sir"

    ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

Why is this a problem? Just stop using voice mail. Eventually it will fill up and stop taking more messages. Anyone that needs you can send you an e-mail.....

Fully agree with the sentiment, but buying a gift (and selfless provision of pleasure) is one thing - giving a gift and being subjected to it's awfulness on full display in the house is entirely another! And from your ongoing tales of woe, it appears that a higher power agrees with me

I have to admire your absolute refusal to be beaten though. Top work sir!

Having spoken to the seller of item #2, I think you're right.

The seller said they checked that item #2 was fine before sending. My guess is that as they closed the polystyrene clamshell they did exactly what I did with item #1. They will at least accept it as a return.

Anyhoo, it seems I must now enter the demi-monde of the comic and model shop to find someone capable of fixing it. I am told they will drill and pin it, fill any gaps and repaint as required (which is handy, as the glue remover I used worked very well as a paint remover too - arse).

I think 66 major is going to get one or other of these things tomorrow, with an explanation as to why it is bust, and then get it properly when it is back from the menders.

    Sigh. More cost.

What I find so entertaining is your dogged determination to give her this one particular thing rather than just saying 'hey, I know, it's clearly a bit sh*te, this thing, I should rethink and get her something else.'

I would only push selfishness so far, eg even trying that old trick of saying such a bike (Pinarello in this case) costs £xxx when in fact it costs twice as much. Lets face it, most non-cyclists, wives and girlfriends can't believe it when a "cheap" bike may cost £1000 but £3000!!! or so for many lovely bikes does qualify for a big loud FFS!

So which one are you returning to seller #2, the one with the simple break or the one that you attempted to "mend"?

It has to be the one with the simple break.

#1 looks like a dog's dinner. Honestly, it looks like someone with Parkinson's and a squint had a go at it with a wallpaper brush loaded with glue. I reckon I could have made a better job of it when I was 8 years old than I did in a hurry between mouthfuls of sandwich one lunchtime. Just goes to show that rushing rarely helps.
