I have just been out on a ride and wanted to know what you guys think of my average speed. I ride on my own and not with a club so i don't know what to 'claim' my level as being.
I just went out on a 11.78 mile ride and averaged 14.0mph. It is quite hilly terrain but the longest and most major hill is 1.46 miles long.
I'm 15 years old and have had my road bike from the start of the year however only recently started to go out on regular rides.
All opinions are appreciated :)
Thanks.

First off well done for getting out there are riding.
As for speed its hard to say as due to road surface, wind and hills your 14 could be really good or not so much so.
.........But I would say its not bad and you would be ok to ride with a club

    Have fun

join now as winter training is much better in a group and the other riders will help you do the right type of riding so you will be at your best come the summer
  • Just keep cycling. I'm 47 and started cycling again in april and started at about 14 mph but has i went through the summer, the speed went up to 14.3, then 14.5 and eventually got it up to 15 mph, so was well chuffed! Just keep going!!

I would just use that average and then try and improve on it next time out..
17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!
  • That's pretty good going at your age. I coach 7 - 16 year olds and they go out on the road as a group. The benefits of 'drafting' or slipstreaming would improve your average, provided you are with riders of similar age and ability.
Try and get into a club that will provide good training/practice for riders of your age. You need to ride with responsible adults, who will help and encourage you, too.
Keep it up through the winter.

You should join the club now. The rides tend to slow down in winter and they should be more patient with slower riders (not saying you are) plus group rides are great for passing the time when you're 'getting the miles in' and if you have any problems there'll be someone to help.
