Which Turbo Trainer.

The time of year has come when the missus starts asking for ideas for my Christmas pressie. Because we have been snowed in for a great many weeks during the past two winters, I had been considering a turbo trainer to use in the garage during such spells. However, my knowledge of these is a bit limited and I don't want her spending the earth on one, so I would be grateful for any recommendations up to about £150. If I give her a choice of two or three, she will feel she had a bit of an input, bless her.

If you are not planning to use a turbo much then just about anything will do. The Tacx Sirius mag trainer is decent for the money.

Have a look on the home page here; there's a fresh review. Tacx Speedmatic gets their vote and it's spot on your budget.

(unless you can persuade Mrs to part with £450 for the Kurt Kinetic....)

I already have a Kurt Kinetic and it will probably outlast me. I would recommend them if you are a heavy turbo-abuser like me (one hour every morning). I guess it also depends whether you want to be able to hook it up to some kind of laptop or iGadget as well.

I've never ridden on rollers so cannot speak about their benefits in comparison to a turbo trainer.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

I have the adjustable cyclops from Wiggle £149 and does me just fine, certainly gets a sweet on!

CompuTrainer rider here. Love it, built like a tank (and new software coming out shortly as well). Downside: expensive, and not exactly easy to get the bike on and off. While it can be used without a PC, it works best when hooked up to a laptop or PC.

If you think you'll be doing a lot of winter training and/or are serious about training, the Computrainer is hard to beat performance-wise. Even at 7-9x the price it may well be worth it if you use it a lot - like I said; it's built like a tank (over 20,000 miles on mine at least count and still rock-solid). But it is a significantly larger investment....
