Mrs. Elephant is a knitter. A keen knitter. She's made some things out of wool that you wouldn't believe. Anyway, she sent me a link to a pattern she found which I'm going to ask the group, in the good, Dave Gorman tradition, genius, or not?

Silly Commuting Earmuffs, anyone? I say genius.

Anyone else found some genius ideas around the interwebs?

    Utter genius.
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

    These:

    Kinda ghey....but...

They are more like wrist warmers, but on those 'inbetweeny' days, they keep my wrists very warm and seal me into my jacket. Protect my watch too.

In fact I wear them most days.

You could get some bespoke ones made out of Tofu.

Genius but I think they would end up stinkin' from all the sweat. I even sweat in winter and unless they were machine washable they would not really work for me...

I have exactly those on my snowboarding lid - though obviously not knitted - work quite well

Make 'em different colours for each FCN, that would be genius. :)

Neat idea, but without wind-proofing, they probably wouldn't work too well?

As a knitter myself, there are various techniques to make them much more weatherproof - viz cornish fisherman's jumpers etc.

You can also spray them with a waterproofing spray to help with the wetness side, but if you've knitted them in one of the more dense ways available the water shouldn't go all the way through.

Also, they wouldn't take long, so you could knit several!

  • I've asked for a set in black, sock weight merino. I'll report back on the warmth, wind-proofiness, how smelly and ridiculous I look. Should be great in the depths of winter, I've never been keen on having my buff over my head.

To be honest, I'm just pleased it's not like the last knitting/bike cross-over she sent me - an anti-theft saddle cover that looked like a lady-garden.

...an anti-theft saddle cover that looked like a lady-garden.

Does your saddle have a cut out? Could make for an interesting 'ride' to work.

Genius if made from a different fabric. I can't see myself rocking those puppies.

  • I can confirm that these are somewhere waaay beyond genius, they are in the realm of god-like in their conception. Wore my beautifully-knitted (thank-you Mrs. Elephant), black, merino-wool earmuffs today. It's bloody Baltic round here today, thick ice and frost everywhere, gear-changes on the bike felt a little harder than normal due to the grease getting stiffer, but lo and behold my ears were super-toasty. I could hear fine through them, the merino didn't seem to get damp and sweaty and they even made my helmet seem to fit slightly better.

    Spot on, they're just superb.
