Ditto the comments re. gels being expensive, and yes, tastes really do vary. Surely you don't get strangers to order from the menu when you eat in a restaurant?

What's wrong with bananas, raisins or the complex carbs found in a flapjack or cereal bar? Or, you could consider the arcane practice of stopping at a shop and buying the occasional sweet snack bar. You did say it's only for training rides. Some people take this 'sports nutrition' thing far too seriously.
