You mean we might actually have to go outside and ride these so called 'bikes' we talk of?

Fark that, it just means more visits to pr0n sites than usual.

Why would it be offline for a week? ....

Build new forum in test environment, move data to that (takes an hour).
Play with it for a week (while leaving it online in the old forum)
Once happy, arrange for something like 12 hours downtime to migrate current data, test and release to live, job done. If you don't like the release, roll back start again, repeat.

Do you know how long it takes to migrate that much data and test to see if it works?

Or maybe the admins/mods are trying to get rid of you

    +1

How many commercial websites do you know of that go down for a week for an upgrade?

You could do it without a significant interruption to service if you wanted to, you're limited only by how much you want to spend.

Not complaining, if it takes a week for BR to upgrade then so be it.

  • I have heard about there. Don't they just talk about head angles and scoff at anyone with a bike costing less than £5k?

I'll stick to our exclusive wee social networking club

Assuming a generous 2k per message, plus an equally generous 2gb for other stuff that would make the migration around 100gb. Assuming a fairly slow sustained read write of say, 40mB then you'd need 40 mins down, 40 mins up. Allow an hour for index rebuilds. Job done.

What is a bike anyway? I've always been curious. Not curious enough to ask obviously.

It's a plaything, normally female, that if you are a good boy - actually not even that - just a boy, that you get to have a ride on! The quality of the ride depends heavily on the how wide any tyres are, whether there's good grip, how your cadence is and particularly your stamina.

My point was that irrespective of the size of the forum's content there are ways of upgrading that would result in little significant downtime. I mentioned commercial websites because they can contain just as much data as the BR forum and there are a whole bunch of posts that suggest that it's the size of the content that is the cause of the lengthy downtime, it's not, it's the way that the upgrade is being implemented.

Don't consider this as a criticism though, as you say, it is just a forum upgrade
